[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) A new method for assessment of the absolute positional accuracy of lidar point clouds is described. It is based on the plane surfaces of building roofs which are derived from laser footprints. Three such planes intersect at a point and the coordinates of several of these well-defined points are compared with points determined from aerial photography. From the differences obtained accuracy measures are derived. An analysis regarding the type of error distribution is carried out in order to determine whether to apply either standard or robust accuracy measures. Confidence intervals are derived for each accuracy measure by means of a unique computational method. A practical test with the proposed method revealed a high precision in the intersected points. The absolute positional accuracy of the lidar point cloud was determined with both standard and robust accuracy measures; the latter always produced smaller values. Suggestions for standards in the assessment of the positional accuracy of laser point clouds are made. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The paper outlines a method to compare two digital surfaces of the same rock face to detect major changes resulting from detached rocks and deformations. A terrestrial laser scanning survey is used for data gathering. After georeferencing, if the cliff has a complex morphology, a 3D segmentation algorithm is applied to split the whole rock surface into more subregions with an almost planar structure. In each subregion the raw point cloud is resampled on a regular grid and multitemporal differences are analyzed. Anomalies in differences, which should be very close to zero if no geometric variations have occurred, are identified with the following purposes: (a) localizing gross changes due to rock detachments, (b) removing global rigid-body displacements, and (c) understanding local cliff deformations. In the case where the rock face is covered by vegetation, this has to be filtered out, e.g., by visual inspection of RGB images co-registered to the point cloud. This paper also describes a procedure to carry out vegetation filtering in automatic way from the analysis of near-infrared images captured by a camera integrated to laser scanner. The application of the full processing pipeline has been tested on a real case study located in the Italian pre-alpine area. Here, after filtering some vegetation, a total rock fall volume of 0.15 m3 was detected on a cliff of about 375 m2 and within a period of six months. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Monitoring damaged buildings in an area where an earthquake has occurred requires the use of techniques which provide rapid and safe measurements even in emergency conditions. In particular, remote sensing techniques like terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) can satisfy these requirements, since they produce very dense point clouds in little time and also allow an accurate geometric modeling of observed buildings. Nevertheless, strong constraints on TLS data acquisition geometry, such as acquisition distance and incidence angles, typically characterize an area in seismic emergency conditions. In order to correctly interpret the data, it is necessary to estimate errors affecting TLS measurements in these critical conditions. A reliable estimation can be achieved by means of experiments and numerical simulations aimed at quantifying a realistic noise level, with emphasis on reduction of artifacts due to data acquisition, registration and modeling. This paper proposes a data analysis strategy in which TLS-based morphological maps computed as point-to-primitive differences are created. The method can be easily used for accurate surveying in emergency conditions. In order to demonstrate the proposed method in very diverse situations, it was applied to rapidly detect deformation traces in the San Giacomo Roncole Campanile (Modena), the Asinelli tower (Bologna) and the Cantalovo Church (Verona), three buildings damaged by the Mw 5.9 Emilia Romagna 2012 earthquake (Italy).
