[Termes IGN] teneur intégrée en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) Recent studies using convection-permitting (CP) climate simulations have demonstrated a step-change in the representation of heavy rainfall and rainfall characteristics (frequency-intensity) compared to coarser resolution Global and Regional climate models. The goal of this study is to better understand what explains the weaker frequency of precipitation in the CP ensemble by assessing the triggering process of precipitation in the different ensembles of regional climate simulations available over Europe. We focus on the statistical relationship between tropospheric temperature, humidity and precipitation to understand how the frequency of precipitation over Europe and the Mediterranean is impacted by model resolution and the representation of convection (parameterized vs. explicit). We employ a multi-model data-set with three different resolutions (0.44°, 0.11° and 0.0275°) produced in the context of the MED-CORDEX, EURO-CORDEX and the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study "Convective Phenomena over Europe and the Mediterranean" (FPSCONV). The multi-variate approach is applied to all model ensembles, and to several surface stations where the integrated water vapor (IWV) is derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. The results show that all model ensembles capture the temperature dependence of the critical value of IWV (IWVcv), above which an increase in precipitation frequency occurs, but the differences between the models in terms of the value of IWVcv, and the probability of its being exceeded, can be large at higher temperatures. The lower frequency of precipitation in convection-permitting simulations is not only explained by higher temperatures but also by a higher IWVcv necessary to trigger precipitation at similar temperatures, and a lower probability to exceed this critical value. The spread between models in simulating IWVcv and the probability of exceeding IWVcv is reduced over land in the ensemble of models with explicit convection, especially at high temperatures, when the convective fraction of total precipitation becomes more important and the influence of the representation of entrainment in models thus becomes more important. Over lowlands, both model resolution and convection representation affect precipitation triggering while over mountainous areas, resolution has the highest impact due to orography-induced triggering processes. Over the sea, since lifting is produced by large-scale convergence, the probability to exceed IWVcv does not depend on temperature, and the model resolution does not have a clear impact on the results. [Termes IGN] Pacifique (océan)Résumé : (auteur) Understanding mantle flow is key to elucidate how deep Earth dynamics relate to tectonics at the global scale. The convective mass transport is reflected in lateral variations of the gravity field, seismic velocities, as well as deformations of the Earth's surface. Yet, upper to mid-mantle dynamics have been difficult to constrain at the medium scales of thousands of km. Here, we analyze the second-order horizontal derivatives of seafloor topography and of the gravity potential over the Pacific and Northern Indian ocean basins, and provide evidence for periodic undulations of 1600-2000 km wavelength in both signals, elongated along the direction of absolute plate motion. We investigate potential crustal and lithospheric sources and show that at least part of this signal must originate below the lithosphere, with alignments of sub-lithospheric upper mantle mass excess below seafloor lows. Furthermore, we find that these alignments coincide geographically over wide areas with similarly periodic slow seismic velocity fingers located at upper mantle depths. These two fields may thus record an intermediate scale of mantle convection below ocean basins, which cannot be explained by purely thermal convection and requires instead lateral variations in composition in the upper mantle. Elucidating the nature of the detected mass excess sources coincident with the slow seismic velocities calls for a joint dynamical modeling of all observations in a thermo-chemical context. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Ma thèse explore l'estimation observationnelle de la sensibilité climatique d'équilibre (ECS) à partir des données instrumentales historiques et récentes, en particulier spatiales. L'ECS est la température globale moyenne de surface de la Terre atteinte après un doublement instantané de la concentration de dioxyde de carbone atmosphérique par rapport à la concentration préindustrielle. Cette quantité est la métrique fondamentale de l'amplitude du changement climatique contemporain, car l'évolution actuelle et future de nombreuses variables du système climatique, comme la température ou l'expansion thermique de l'océan, lui est fortement corrélée. L'ECS demeure cependant mal connue, puisque depuis le rapport Charney de 1979 jusqu'au Cinquième rapport d'évaluation du Groupe intergouvernemental d'experts sur le climat (GIEC), sa plage de valeurs probables se situait entre 1,5 et 4,5 degrés, avec un biais marqué entre estimations instrumentales, qui se situent dans la partie basse de l'intervalle, et estimations issues des modèles de climat, qui se situent dans la partie haute de l'intervalle. La cause principale de cette dispersion réside dans le fait que la sensibilité climatique varie avec le temps, en lien notamment avec l'effet radiatif des structures spatiales du réchauffement de surface, qui peuvent changer au cours du temps du fait de la variabilité interne du climat ou des variations historiques dans le type de forçage. Ma thèse utilise des séries temporelles observationnelles récentes de contenu de chaleur de l'océan et de température de surface, et une reconstruction récente de forçage radiatif, pour estimer le paramètre de rétroaction climatique, puis l'ECS, par régression linéaire de l'équation du bilan d'énergie planétaire. Dans ce processus, je prends en compte toutes les sources d'erreur et je les propage dans la régression afin d'obtenir une description exhaustive de l'incertitude observationnelle associée à l'ECS. Par ailleurs, j'utilise les variations temporelles du paramètre de rétroaction climatique simulées par les modèles de climat pour évaluer les biais et incertitudes associés à ce paramètre et dus à la structure spatiale du réchauffement historique. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate change is predicted to increase temperature and seasonal temperature variance in Great Britain (GB). Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr) is the most important tree species used in commercial plantations throughout Europe and GB. Frosts that occur outside the winter dormancy period can negatively affect trees, since they happen after dehardening. Damage can be especially severe at bud burst, before emerging needles mature and form protective barriers. Here, we modelled the impact of climate change on frost sensitivity in Sitka spruce with temperature data from five climate projections. The UKCP09 climate model HadRm3 uses emission scenario SRESA1B for the years 2020–2099. The global and downscaled versions of the UKCP18 HadGem3 model use the emissions scenario RCP 8.5. The global model CMCC-CM uses the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 emissions scenarios. The predictions based on these models were compared with results from gridded historical data for the period 1960–2015. Three indicators that assessed the frost sensitivity of Sitka spruce were explored: the total number of frosts between the onset of dehardening and the end of summer, which use three different temperature thresholds (Index 10°C, 1–3°C, 1–5°C); the total number of frosts after bud burst (Index 2); the number of days with minimum temperatures below the resistance level (backlashes) during the hardening–dehardening period (September–August) (Index 3). The indices were validated with historical data for frost damage across GB, and Index 1–3°C, Index 1–5°C and Index 3 were shown to be significantly correlated. The frequency of all frosts and backlashes is expected to decrease with climate change, especially under higher emissions scenarios. Post-bud burst frosts have been historically very rare in GB and remain so with climate change. Downscaled regional climate models detect geographic variability within GB and improve prediction of overall trends in frost damage in comparison to global climate change models for GB.
