[Termes IGN] Washington (Etats-Unis ; état)Résumé : (auteur) Over the past few years, deep learning (DL) has emerged as an important tool in the fields of volcano and earthquake seismology. However, these methods have been applied without performing thorough analyses of the associated uncertainties. Here, we propose a solution to enhance volcano-seismic monitoring systems, through probabilistic Bayesian DL; we implement and demonstrate a workflow for waveform classification, rapid quantification of the associated uncertainty, and link these uncertainties to changes in volcanic unrest. Specifically, we introduce Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) to perform event identification, classification, and their estimated uncertainty on data gathered at two active volcanoes, Mount St. Helens, Washington, USA, and Bezymianny, Kamchatka, Russia. We demonstrate how BNNs achieve excellent performance (92.08%) in discriminating both the type of event and its origin when the two data sets are merged together, and no additional training information is provided. Finally, we demonstrate that the data representations learned by the BNNs are transferable across different eruptive periods. We also find that the estimated uncertainty is related to changes in the state of unrest at the volcanoes and propose that it could be used to gauge whether the learned models may be exported to other eruptive scenarios. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) As a fundamental climate state variable, sea ice thickness (SIT) has exhibited a declining trend over the past five decades. Here, we present a quantitative comparison of three CryoSat-2 (CS-2) SIT products from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI), the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), and the European Space Agency (ESA) during the growth season (October to April) from 2010 to 2018 with Operation IceBridge (OIB) data. The results show that the NSIDC SIT product is the closest to the OIB SIT, with ESA SIT exhibiting the highest bias. During each growth season, the SIT differences between AWI and NSIDC gradually decrease, while such differences between ESA and NSIDC increase for first-year ice (FYI) and decrease then increase for multiyear ice (MYI). The difference between ESA and NSIDC is larger than that between AWI and NSIDC. Moreover, the rather large differences between ESA and NSIDC are mainly located in thin ice areas. Consistent to SIT comparative results, sea ice freeboard for ESA is higher than that for OIB, AWI and NSIDC, especially FYI freeboard. Sea ice freeboard for NSIDC is the closest to that for OIB. The comparative results indicate that the sources of the differences in SIT between the products mainly originate from the sea ice density and freeboard retrieval methods. The choices of different waveform retrackers and threshold assignments significantly influence the MYI freeboard retrievals due to the relatively thick snow depth and high surface roughness over MYI. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Single-frequency users of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) must correct for the ionospheric delay. These corrections are available from global ionospheric models (GIMs). Therefore, the accuracy of the GIM is important because the unmodeled or incorrectly part of ionospheric delay contributes to the positioning error of GNSS-based positioning. However, the positioning error of receivers located at known coordinates can be used to infer the accuracy of GIMs in a simple manner. This is why assessment of GIMs by means of the position domain is often used as an alternative to assessments in the ionospheric delay domain. The latter method requires accurate reference ionospheric values obtained from a network solution and complex geodetic modeling. However, evaluations using the positioning error method present several difficulties, as evidenced in recent works, that can lead to inconsistent results compared to the tests using the ionospheric delay domain. We analyze the reasons why such inconsistencies occur, applying both methodologies. We have computed the position of 34 permanent stations for the entire year of 2014 within the last Solar Maximum. The positioning tests have been done using code pseudoranges and carrier-phase leveled (CCL) measurements. We identify the error sources that make it difficult to distinguish the part of the positioning error that is attributable to the ionospheric correction: the measurement noise, pseudorange multipath, evaluation metric, and outliers. Once these error sources are considered, we obtain equivalent results to those found in the ionospheric delay domain assessments. Accurate GIMs can provide single-frequency navigation positioning at the decimeter level using CCL measurements and better positions than those obtained using the dual-frequency ionospheric-free combination of pseudoranges. Finally, some recommendations are provided for further studies of ionospheric models using the position domain method. Sub-wavelength distances between adjacent rods and sub-wavelength rod diameters are assumed throughout the frequency band of operation and this leads to a severe challenge due to need of super-resolution within the present micro-structure, well beyond the Rayleigh criterion. A wealth of solution methods is investigated and comprehensive numerical simulations illustrate pros and cons, completed by processing laboratory-controlled experimental data acquired on a micro-structure prototype in a microwave anechoic chamber. These methods, which differ per a priori information accounted for and consequent versatility, include time-reversal, binary-specialized contrast-source and sparsity-constrained inversions, and convolutional neural networks possibly combined with recurrent ones. Note de contenu :
