[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The current increase in European forest resources forms a singularity across the globe. Whether this trend will persist, and how biological and economic trends feature it form crucial issues to green economy challenges and C sequestration. The present screening of Forest Europe 2015 statistics explored the features, inertia and limits of this expansion, and its relationships with countries’ development, forest management and trade, intense in this area of the world. Persisting footprint of past demographic pressure on forests was identified, with opposed traces on their area and growing stock density. Steady growing stock (GS) increases, proportional to GS, not density-limited, and sustained by forest area increases, supported the view of an inflationary forest dynamic. Economic development and liberalism fostered both forest exploitation and production, yielding no significant impact on GS changes. Wood exports exerted a tension on forest exploitation and GS changes, thus lowering GS inflation but providing a resource security margin in the face of expected climate threats. Conflicting a common view, GS inflation and moderate felling-to-increment ratios make increased use of wood resources and C sequestration reconcilable, and GS expansion timely for ongoing EU forest policy processes. Anticipated adverse impacts of ongoing climate change were not clearly identified in these statistics. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Forests are key elements in mitigating the effects of climate change due to the fact of their carbon sequestration capacity. Forest management can be oriented to optimise the carbon sequestration capacity of forest stands, in line with other productive objectives and the generation of ecosystem services. This research aimed to determine whether thinning treatments have a positive influence on the growth patterns of some of the main Mediterranean pine species and, therefore, on their Carbon (C) fixation capacity, both in terms of living biomass and soil organic carbon. The results obtained show that C sequestration capacity (biomass and SOC) increased at higher thinning intensities due to the induced alterations in tree growth patterns. We observed almost a 1.5-fold increase in P. nigra and P. sylvestris, respectively, and over a two-fold increase in P. pinaster under heavy thinning treatments; SOC stocks were affected by the intensity of the thinning treatments. These results can contribute to improving silvicultural practices aimed at C sequestration in forest plantations located in dry areas of the Mediterranean. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) Previous studies on tidal flood mapping are mostly through continental- and/or global-scale approaches. Moreover, the few works on local-scale perception are concentrated in Europe, Asia, and North America. Here, we present a case study approaching a tidal flood risk mapping application in the face of climate change scenarios in a region with a strong environmental and social appeal. The study site is an estuarine cut in the Brazilian semi-arid region, covering part of two state conservation units, which has been suffering severe consequences from tidal flooding in recent years. In this case study, we used high-geodetic-precision data (lidar DEM), together with robust tidal return period statistics and data from current sea level rise scenarios. We found that approximately 327.60 km2 of the estuary is under tidal flood risk and in need of mitigation measures. This case study can serve as a basis for future management actions, as well as a model for applying risk mapping in other coastal areas. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Information on carbon stocks and the rate of carbon accumulation is needed to harness the climate change mitigation potential of boreal forests. While previous studies have revealed general patterns and mechanisms for age-dependence of stand biomass, simple stand-level models that address the age-biomass relationship on average in managed boreal forests in different environmental conditions are largely missing. We developed models for the relationship between stand age and biomass by forest types on peatlands and mineral soils across climate zones in managed forests in Finland based on National Forest Inventory measurements from 1996 to 2018. In addition, we analyzed at which rate biomass accumulates when managed forest ages in different growth conditions. In northern Finland the maximum biomass change rate was one third, and the maximum biomass stock less than half of the corresponding values in sub-xeric heath forests on minerals soils in southern Finland. On drained peatlands the maximum biomass growth rate was approximately half, and on undrained peatlands one third of the maximum growth rate on mineral soils. On most fertile sites on mineral soils the maximum biomasses were three times larger than on the poorest sites. Correspondingly, the maximum biomass stock change rates were almost eight times faster on most fertile sites. In the example cases presented, the highest annual biomass change rates were achieved in young forests on average at the stand ages of 7–32 years, whereas the 95% of the maximum stock were reached on average in stands of 63–147 years. At the age of highest biomass growth rate stands contained 27–59% of the maximum biomass stocks. The developed models can be used in practical applications such as accounting of biogenic carbon in life-cycle assessments, mapping carbon, or creating simple predictions of biomass stock development in regions, or estimating the mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation or estimating the magnitude of carbon offsets projects.
