[Termes IGN] gravimétrie spatialeRésumé : (auteur) Satellite gravimetry is a unique measurement technique for observing mass transport processes in the Earth system on a global scale, providing essential indicators of both subtle and dramatic global change. Although past and current satellite gravity missions have achieved spectacular science results, due to their limited spatial and temporal resolution as well as limited length of the available time series numerous important questions are still unresolved. Therefore, it is important to move from current demonstration capabilities to sustained observation of the Earth’s gravity field. In an international initiative performed under the umbrella of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, consensus on the science and user needs for a future satellite gravity observing system has been derived by an international panel of scientists representing the main fields of application, i.e., continental hydrology, cryosphere, ocean, atmosphere and solid Earth. In this paper the main results and findings of this initiative are summarized. The required target performance in terms of equivalent water height has been identified as 5 cm for monthly fields and 0.5 cm/year for long-term trends at a spatial resolution of 150 km. The benefits to meet the main scientific and societal objectives are investigated, and the added value is demonstrated for selected case studies covering the main fields of application. The resulting consolidated view on the required performance of a future sustained satellite gravity observing system represents a solid basis for the definition of technological and mission requirements, and is a prerequisite for mission design studies of future mission concepts and constellations. [Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of this study was to apply, verify and compare fuzzy models with various fuzzy combination operators to analyze the vulnerability to flooding in Seoul, Korea, and to create flood vulnerability maps. We employed the IPCC concept of vulnerability, which comprises exposure to climate, sensitivity and the adaptive capacity, to identify factors that influence flooding. Eleven factors were compiled in a spatial database using geographical information system. The relative weight of each factor was converted into a fuzzy membership value, which was integrated to obtain a flood vulnerability index using five fuzzy combination operators (fuzzy AND, fuzzy OR, fuzzy algebraic sum, fuzzy algebraic product and fuzzy gamma). Overall, the fuzzy models were quite effective tools for flood vulnerability assessment. Of the five fuzzy combination operators, the fuzzy AND operator obtained the highest prediction accuracy of 88.68%. This study achieved better flood vulnerability assessments by employing and comparing fuzzy combination operators. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Biodiversity is continuing to decline. This crisis has been recognised by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), whose members have set ambitious targets to avert ongoing declines in the state of biodiversity by 2020. These so called “Aichi Biodiversity Targets” (ABTs) are organized around five strategic goals, with indicators showing the level of progress made towards each target. Currently, measurements of many ABT indicators are not available. The Essential Biodiversity Variable (EBV) framework, developed by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), attempts to form a coherent and harmonised set of observations of biodiversity. In this paper, we explore the potential role of Earth Observation (EO) as a tool to support biodiversity monitoring against the ABT and EBV frameworks. We show that EO-based measurements are adequate for assessing progress towards 11 out of 20 ABTs. In addition, 14 of the 22 candidate EBVs have a fully or partly remotelysensed component and can be considered as Remote Sensing Essential Biodiversity Variables (RS-EBVs). Those with a partial EO component require further in-situ data and/or modelling effort to complete the EBV. While the status of biodiversity can be assessed with both fully and partly measured RS-EBVs, assessing trends is more challenging, particularly for partly measured RS-EBVs, as coincident time series of EO and supporting data are lacking. A synthetic pathway for developing generic biodiversity indicators using RS-EBVs is proposed. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Sea surface temperature (SST) plays a vital role in the Earth's atmosphere and climate systems. Complete and accurate SST observations are in great demand for forecasting tropical cyclones and projecting climate change. Satellite remote sensing has been used to retrieve SST globally, but missing values and biased observations impose difficulties on practical applications of these satellite-derived SST data. Conventional spatial statistics methods such as kriging have been widely used to fill the gaps. However, when such conventional methods are used to analyze a massive satellite data set of size n, the inversion of the n × n covariance matrix may require O(n3) computations, which make the computation very intensive or even infeasible. The fixed rank kriging (FRK) performs dimension reduction through multiresolution wavelet analysis so that it can dramatically reduce the computation cost of various kriging methods. However, the FRK cannot directly be used for incomplete data over spatially irregular regions such as SSTs, and the potential bias in the satellite data is not addressed. In this paper, we construct a data-driven bias-correction model for the correction of the bias in satellite SSTs and develop a robust FRK (R-FRK) method so that the dimension reduction can be used to the satellite data in irregular regions with missing data. We implement the bias-correction model and the R-FRK to the level-3 mapped night Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer SSTs. The accuracy of the resulting predictions is assessed using the colocated drifting buoy SST observations, in terms of mean bias (bias), root-mean-squared error, and R squared (R2). The spatial completeness is assessed by the availability of ocean pixels. The assessment results show that the spatially.
