[Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) As the largest source of momentum for the ocean surface, wind affects the full range, of oceanic motion-from individual surface waves to complete current systems. The marine surface wind is among the critical geophysical parameters which determine the most fundamental aspects of the ocean. Using six years (1993-1998) of TOPEX altimeter data with an unprecedented accuracy and continuity, a detailed investigation of the global structure of marine wind climatology and variability is carried out. It is found that the overall pattern of wind climatology is basically determined by solar radiation and therefore dominated by zonal features, while that of the wind variability is largely 'event' determined and thereby dominated by regional features. Consequently, wind climatology and wind variability show a complex relationship in their magnitude of intensity. Strong winds may be associated with high variabilities, such as in the westerlies of the North Atlantic and North Pacific; they may also be associated with low variabilities, such as in the westerlies of the Southern Ocean. Meanwhile, weak wind zones like the doldrums in the western equatorial Pacific can have a very low level of annual variability, while a very high level of interannual variability. The Asian monsoon system has a lower than average climatological mean speed, but exhibits extremely high annual variability. The phase distributions of wind variations carry combined information of climatology and variability. Effects of the Asian monsoon and marine storms are manifested on top of the basically zonal phase pattern. Statistics suggest that semiannual variability exceeds annual variability for 12.2% of the world's oceans, and interannual variability exceeds annual variability for 26.4% of the world's oceans. [Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (Auteur) Climate change studies require consistent, long time series, surface reflectance data. The characterization of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is important for normalizing the solar radiation reflected from the earth's surface. We evaluated four BRDF models to identify the preferred approach to the normalization of multiyear National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and SPOT4VEGETATION (VGT) composite images to a common illumination and viewing geometry. Four models by the following authors were included: Walthall, Ropjean, Ross-Li, and a new nonlinear temporal angular model (NTAM). NTAM accounts for hotspot effects and also responds to seasonal changes in land cover properties (using vegetation indexes as surrogate temporal measures). We compared the performance of the models under different scenarios of coefficient derivation and model application including model ability to reproduce theoretical BRDF curves, model consistency in single, multiyear, and incomplete sampling schemes, and comparison of AVMR and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper surface reflectance prior and after BRDF normalization. We found that in all the tests, NTAM yielded the best fits between the observed and estimated values. NTAM requires eight coefficients and a lengthier iterative procedure to derive the coefficients, but the resulting coefficients are applied to the entire growing season rather than one temporal window. NTAM also performed well for different sensors (AVHRR, VGT) and geographic areas (Canada, east Asia, southern United States). Our results contradict the often-encountered perception that semiempirical BRDF models for angular normalization are all similarly effective, and the research on this topic is mature. We also describe a procedure for routine normalization of satellite optical data. For northern ecosystems, the NTAM coefficients derived from AVHRR and VGT data for Canada are available via ftp://Ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca. It is therefore of special importance to select such an area to carry out an intensive land use change study and establish a dynamic monitoring system thereof aiming at understanding the change mechanism, human-environmental relationships and producing useful references for the central and local governments in their sustainable land use planning.
Multitemporal Landsat images were used for change detection by adopting a synthetic method including atmospheric correction, Tasseled Cap transformation, indicator differencing, thresholding, change type identification and county-level quantification. A classification on the recent image was conducted to quantify the present land use and cover pattern. A panel analysis calibrated by multivariate regression model was applied to reveal the driving forces of land cover changes and understand the interaction between the human activities and environment modifications by incorporating the results obtained from the change detection with the county-level socio-economic data. The regression modelling results suggest that the vegetation degradation- the predominant change type in the study area, is probably related to the soil erosion (R' = 0.994) and grassland degradation; the farmland extension, occurring principally in the valleys in the Yulin County, is associated with the foodproduct increase (R' = 0.987); the urban extension, spatially related to coal mining, is linked to the urban population growth (R' = 0. 881); and the surface decrease of waterbodies, having taken place in the sandy land, is negatively correlated to the cultivated land change (R' = 0. 562). Therefore, the factors which govern these land use and cover changes are various human socio-economic activities, and the root cause of land degradation is, however, some unreasonable land use policies.Numéro de notice : A2003-392 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : sans Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26472
