[Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) Air pollution and road traffic noise are two important environmental nuisances that could be harmful to the health and well-being of urban populations. In Mexico City, as in many North American cities, there has been an upusurge in bicycle ridership. However, Mexico City is also well known for having high levels of noise and air pollution. The purpose of this study is threefold: 1) evaluate cyclists' exposure to air pollution (nitrogen dioxide) and road traffic noise; 2) identify local factors that increase or reduce cyclists' exposure, in paying particular attention to the type of road and bicycle path or lane used; and 3) evaluate the influence of real-time traffic density on cyclists' exposure. A total of 19 bicycle trips made in central Mexico City neighbourhoods were analyzed, representing nearly 11 hours and 137 km. The results of the Bayesian models show that type of road and bicyle infrastructure taken by the cyclist, and proximity to a main artery all have significant impacts on exposure levels. Finally, the variables introduced to control for the traffic encountered by cyclists had a significant positive effect on noise exposure, and a positive but not significant effect on nitrogen dioxide exposure. [Termes IGN] tempêteRésumé : (auteur) Spatiotemporal association pattern mining can discover interesting interdependent relationships among various types of geospatial data. However, existing mining methods for spatiotemporal association patterns usually model geographic phenomena as simple spatiotemporal point events. Therefore, they cannot be applied to complex geographic phenomena, which continuously change their properties, shapes or locations, such as storms and air pollution. The most salient feature of such complex geographic phenomena is the geographic dynamic. To fully reveal dynamic characteristics of complex geographic phenomena and discover their associated factors, this research proposes a novel complex event-based spatiotemporal association pattern mining framework. First, a complex geographic event was hierarchically modeled and represented by a new data structure named directed spatiotemporal routes. Then, sequence mining technique was applied to discover the spatiotemporal spread pattern of the complex geographic events. An adaptive spatiotemporal episode pattern mining algorithm was proposed to discover the candidate driving factors for the occurrence of complex geographic events. Finally, the proposed approach was evaluated by analyzing the air pollution in the region of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach can well address the geographic dynamic of complex geographic phenomena, such as the spatial spreading pattern and spatiotemporal interaction with candidate driving factors. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Since the 1980-90′s episodes of decline in Central European Forests, forest condition has been surveyed thanks to the trans-national network the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests). It has been traditionally accepted that leaf loss is directly related to impairment of physiological condition of the tree. A few studies tried to correlate crown condition and growth trends while others concentrated on linking annual growth with crown observation at one date clustered into fertility classes. However, none focussed on the high frequency synchronism between leaf loss from annual network observations and annual radial growth issued from dendrochronology. Therefore, we jointly studied annual leaf loss observations and tree-ring width measurements on 715 common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees distributed in the French part of the ICP monitoring network. Detrended inter-annual variations of leaf loss and tree-ring width index were used as response variables in the machine-learning algorithm Random Forest to investigate a common response to abiotic (current and lagged) and biotic hazards, to test the extent to which leaf loss helped to predict inter-annual variations in radial growth. Using Random Forest was effective to identify a common sensitivity to soil water deficit at different time lags. Previous-year climatic variables tended to control leaf loss while radial growth was more sensitive to current-year soil water deficit. Late frost damages were observed on crown condition in mountainous regions but no impact was detected on radial growth. Few significant biotic damages were observed on growth or leaf loss. Leaf loss series did not show a clear common signal among trees from a plot as did radial growth and captured fewer pointer years. Radial growth index did not fall below normal until a 20% leaf loss was reached. However, this threshold is driven by a few extreme leaf loss events. As shown by our joint analysis of leaf loss and radial growth pointer years, no relationship occurred in cases of slight or moderate defoliation. Crown condition is a poorer descriptor of tree vitality than radial growth. They can be divided into the following major categories: urban development, fragmentation, and isolation of forests; human pressures on soil and vegetation (e.g., changes in vegetation due to trampling, environmental and especially air pollution); human pressures on animals (e.g., wildlife losses due to collisions, frequent presence of dogs accompanying the visitors); and other threats and damages (e.g., littering and acts of vandalism). The directions of negative relations between people and forests shown in this review draw attention to the high complexity of the discussed issues. Awareness of this complexity (when planning and implementing forest management) can limit or counteract conflicts arising from the use of urban and suburban forests by people. This is of particular importance in the era of progressing urbanization and the evolution of human needs regarding the use of forests.
