[Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal areas comprise some of the world's most important and sensitive ecosystems. Although optical remote sensing systems have demonstrated an ability to map land cover in many coastal environments, spectral confusion has also been reported. The parameters of SAR imagery suggest that combinations of SAR and optical data may improve land-cover classification accuracy. Seven satellite SAR data sets were merged with TM data using four techniques. These were tested by classifying 11 upland and wetland land covers in a rapidly urbanizing coastal area of the northeast United States. Not all SABITM combinations bettered the accuracy obtained using TM data alone. In general, simple techniques improved accuracy more than did complex image merge methods. Although one SAR image proved superior overall, improvement in detection accuracy varied among individual land-cover categories and SAR data. The results point to the possible benefits of hierarchical-layered classifications. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This study examined the complementarity of radar and optical data for feature identification. Spaceborne radar and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM ) multispectral data sets were assessed independently and in combination to classify a site near Wad Medani, Sudan. Radar processing procedures included speckle reduction, texture extraction and postprocessing smoothing. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by comparison to ground truth information derived from field visitation. Neither speckle filtering nor postclassification smoothing were improvements over the poor results obtained with the unfiltered, original radar data. Texture measures were significant improvements over the original data (20 percent overall accuracy increase) and several, but not all, individual classes had excellent results. Landsat TM had good overall results (80 percent correct) but considerable spectral confusion between urban and bare soil. Combination of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, itas effective in managing a complex set of analysis possibilities. [Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper gives an introduction to multi-baseline polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) and shows experimental results obtained with a spacebome and an airborne SAR system. Conventional InSAR combines two SAR images of the same scene acquired from slightly different viewing angles. Pol-InSAR improves the performance of scalar InSAR by exploiting the wave polarisation, allowing a more sophisticated physical interpretation of SAR interferograms. The interferometric decomposition permits the identification of arbitrary scattering mechanisms in two interferometric SAR images and the optimisation of the interterometric coherence, using the identified mathematically independent phase centres related to these scattering mechanisms. Pol-InSAR is sensitive to the distribution of oriented objects in vegetation layers. It is demonstrated that the calculated scattering mechanisms have different vertical loci that can be related to certain vegetation structures. This technique allows for a more appropriate reconstruction of the quasi-three-dimensional spatial distribution of such scattering processes within natural media. Further, the effect of the baseline on the estimation of these scattering mechanisms is shown for the interferometric decomposition. Finally, the differential interferometric phase is calculated between the associated scattering mechanisms for all interferometric pairs and different polarisation states. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The paper addresses the detection of changes in multitemporal polarimetric radar images, focusing on small objects and narrow linear features. The images were acquired at C- and L-band by the airborne EMISAR system. It is found that the radar intensities are better suited for change detection than the correlation coefficient and the phase difference between the co-polarized channels. In the case of linear features, there is no obvious difference between C- and L-band, and slight variations of the flight tracks are acceptable at look angles larger than 35 degrees. Theoretical detection thresholds are evaluated from the statistical distribution of the intensity ratio due to speckle. For the linear features and for urban environments, the observed thresholds are larger than the theoretical predictions. This is interpreted as an effect of radar intensity variations on length scales smaller than the spatial image resolution. The signature of urban areas is very sensitive to deviations between the flight tracks, and the sensitivity is larger at C-band than at L-band. On the other hand, the intensity contrast between buildings and the urban background is smaller at L-band and larger at C-band. For change detection, thresholds may have to be chosen separately for each object class because the intensity ratios of different object classes vary differently as a function of time. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Natural disasters are most often measured on a quantitatively large scale: 'the big picture'. But it is just as important to keep track of small shifts, since these may have major consequences. Professionals responsible for ensuring a stable environment keep track of those ground movements that don't make the headlines; those shifts that go undetected by sight or feel. Numerous studies world-wide have revealed that these undetected movements are frequent and that they can be as fine as a shift of a few millimetres.
