It is organized in three main parts. The first part presents technological information about remote sensing (choice of satellite orbit and sensors) and elements of physics related to sensing (optics and microwave propagation). The second part presents image processing algorithms and their specificities for radar or optical, multi and hyper-spectral images. The final part is devoted to applications: change detection and analysis of time series, elevation measurement, displacement measurement and data assimilation. Offering a comprehensive survey of the domain of remote sensing imagery with a multi-disciplinary approach, this book is suitable for graduate students and engineers, with backgrounds either in computer science and applied math (signal and image processing) or geo-physics. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) Impervious surface estimation has been widely conducted with medium-high resolution optical imagery. Challenges however, remain in aspects of spectral similarity of different objects, mixed pixel, and shadows of tall buildings or large tree crowns. In order to reduce these uncertainties, this study explores the synergistic use of optical and radar remote sensing datasets in highly populated urban areas. A comparative analysis is performed between the RADARSAT-2 full POLSAR image and the SPOTS optical image. For both datasets, the C5.0 decision tree algorithm is applied to select features extracted to build a decision tree for urban impervious surface classification. It is found in this study that optical and POLSAR images possess different merits in delineating urban land surfaces. The POLSAR data is helpful for delineating bright impervious surfaces (e.g., buildings) and bare soils, which is often a difficult task for optical data. However, the confusion between dark impervious surfaces and bare soils becomes a severe problem due to similar surface scattering mechanisms. The intrinsic characteristics of radar scattering (e.g., layover and shadow effects) also result in high uncertainties in dense urban areas. These problems are leveraged when both optical and decomposed POLSAR features are considered. The results from this study indicate that the synergistic use of optical and POLSAR data could be an efficient approach to improving the estimation of urban impervious surfaces. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (auteur) A new method for unmixing radar polarimetric images with optical images is proposed. It was found that the polarimetric covariance matrix can be unmixed considering a linear model. As a result, this model is used to produce unmixed covariance matrices based on land cover types. We hope to prove that this unmixing of the polarimetric information produce greater information for land cover classification. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Orthorectification using digital terrain models is a key issue for full-polarimetric complex SAR data because resampling the complex data can corrupt the polarimetric phase, mainly in terrain with relief. This research thus compared two methods for the orthorectification of the complex SAR data: The polarimetric processing is performed before (image-space method) or after (ground-space method) the geometric processing. Radarsat-2 fine-quad data acquired with different look angles over a hilly relief study site were orthorectified using accurate light detection and ranging digital surface model. Quantitative evaluations between the two methods as a function of different geometric and radiometric parameters were thus performed to evaluate the impact during orthorectification. The results demonstrated that the look angles and the terrain slopes can potentially corrupt the polarimetric complex SAR data during its orthorectification with the ground-space method. In addition, general advice is provided to reduce these impacts to an acceptable level for the users and their polarimetric applications. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, the registration of decimeter-resolution airborne multi-aspect SAR (MASAR) data of inner city areas by application of the radargrammetric range-Doppler equations is investigated. The geometrical model is adapted to linear flight trajectories and zero-Doppler processed SAR data, whereas the observed trajectory parameters are adjusted using a strict Gauss–Helmert model and known ground control points. The significance of the estimated corrections is examined and the most suitable set of free parameters is determined. Finally, the methodology is applied to real test data of an airborne campaign over the city of Munich, Germany, and the feasability of the proposed radargrammetric registration method is shown.
