[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The aims of the study are the description of the distribution patterns of main forest tree species along complex environmental gradients and niche characterization, using the data from 772 plots from the third Spanish National Forest Inventory. Simultaneously, we would like to identify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variation to the species compositional patterns. Spatially structured environmental and fine-scale spatial variables explained more tree compositional distribution than broad-scale spatial variables, suggesting that niche partitioning is the main process influencing forest species abundances along this gradient. However, vegetation compositional changes were mainly determined by the north–south topographic-climatic differences (primary coenocline), although steepness was also related to the particular location of some plant communities. Unimodal response curves dominate along the gradients, with tree species optima at different points, providing evidence of a sufficient amount of compositional turnover. Niche location of trait-related tree species is closely located. Tree species occupying environments with sharp contrast or transitional environments have broadest niches, whereas those species occupying localized habitats showed the narrowest niches. The methodology used provides an objective assessment of the shape of species' responses along complex ecological gradients, as well as of the spatial and environmental factors implicated in their distribution patterns using datasets from national forest inventories. The description of the main factors determining the gradients and the species distributions and niche characteristics will improve our ability to discuss potential conservation management goals or threats due to land uses changes and future climate change. [Termes IGN] taillisRésumé : (auteur) : Key message: Xylem and soil CO 2 fluxes in coppiced oak forests increase with clonal size, suggesting larger expenditures of energy for root respiration. An imbalance between root demand and shoot production of carbohydrates may contribute to the degradation of abandoned coppices.
Context: Our understanding of root respiration is limited, particularly in root-resprouting species with many stems and a large system of interconnected roots resulting from long-term coppicing.
Aims: We tested the hypothesis that clone size influences the internal flux of CO2 dissolved in xylem sap (F T) from roots into the stem and soil CO2 efflux (F S) as indicators of root respiration. We predicted that large clones would exhibit higher F T per stem and F S than small clones due to larger root system per stem in large clones.
Methods: Genetic analyses were performed to elucidate clonal grouping. F T was measured continuously for 100 days in 16 similar-sized stems of Quercus pyrenaica belonging to two large and two small clones. F S was measured in 20 clones of varying size.
Results: F T per stem and F S were higher in large clones. F T was 2 % of the root-respired CO2 that diffused through soil to the atmosphere.
Conclusions: Relative to other studies, the contribution of F T to root respiration was very low, pointing to large differences depending on species or site. Higher stem F T and F S in large clones compared with small clones suggest greater carbon consumption by roots in large clones, pointing to a root/shoot biomass and physiological imbalance resulting from long-term coppicing that would partially explain the degradation of currently abandoned stands of Q. pyrenaica.

[Termes IGN] stress hydriqueRésumé : (auteur) Even-aged forest stands are competitive communities where competition for light gives advantages to tall individuals, thereby inducing a race for height. These same individuals must however balance this competitive advantage with height-related mechanical and hydraulic risks. These phenomena may induce variations in height–diameter growth relationships, with primary dependences on stand density and tree social status as proxies for competition pressure and access to light, and on availability of local environmental resources, including water. We aimed to investigate the effects of stand density, tree social status and water stress on the individual height–circumference growth allocation (Δh–Δc), in even-aged stands of Quercus petraea Liebl. (sessile oak). Within-stand Δc was used as surrogate for tree social status. We used an original long-term experimental plot network, set up in the species production area in France, and designed to explore stand dynamics on a maximum density gradient. Growth allocation was modelled statistically by relating the shape of the Δh–Δc relationship to stand density, stand age and water deficit. The shape of the Δh–Δc relationship shifted from linear with a moderate slope in open-grown stands to concave saturating with an initial steep slope in closed stands. Maximum height growth was found to follow a typical mono-modal response to stand age. In open-grown stands, increasing summer soil water deficit was found to decrease height growth relative to radial growth, suggesting hydraulic constraints on height growth. A similar pattern was found in closed stands, the magnitude of the effect however lowering from suppressed to dominant trees. We highlight the high phenotypic plasticity of growth in sessile oak trees that further adapt their allocation scheme to their environment. Stand density and tree social status were major drivers of growth allocation variations, while water stress had a detrimental effect on height in the Δh–Δc allocation.
