[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The knowledge of pollen sensitivity and tolerance to stress factors such as air pollution is important for forest sustainability, ensuring the most efficient production with the highest benefits and lowest resource losses. This study intended to evaluate the influence of common air pollutants in four forest trees species, Betula pendula Roth, Corylus avellana L., Acer negundo L. and Quercus robur L., through a comparative analysis at the same experimental conditions. We aimed to investigate the effect that may occur in pollen fertility, protein content, oxidative stress and wall composition after exposure in vitro to ozone and nitrogen dioxide at concentration levels for vegetation protection in Europe. Our results suggest changes in pollen viability, protein content and differential sensitivity related to ROS synthesis, NADPH oxidase activity, as well as in wall composition. The results indicate that NO2 exposure affected more the pollen species studied mostly at the highest concentration exposure. As for ozone, there were less significant differences between samples; however, a different behavior occurs in O3 expositions, where the most influence happens at the legal limit for vegetation protection in Europe. Our study showed that significant pollen functions could be compromised even at common air pollutant’s concentrations. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Tree height is one of the most important tree attributes in forest inventory. However, using conventional field methods to measure tree height is a laborious and time-consuming process. Despite the great interest in the past to facilitate tree height measurements, new, upcoming solutions are not yet thoroughly investigated. In this study, we investigated the applicability of different close-range remote sensing options for tree height measurement in a complex lowland deciduous forest. Six sample plots in a pedunculate oak forest were measured in detail using conventional methods. Close-range remote sensing datasets used in this study represent solutions from low-cost sensors used for hand-held personal laser scanning (PLShh), unmanned–borne laser scanning (ULS) and unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry (UAVimage). Each tree in the sample plots was interactively measured directly from the point cloud, and correspondence of the field- and remote sensing measured trees was verified using tree positions collected during fieldwork. Cross-comparisons of different datasets were performed to evaluate the performances of different data sources in the tree height estimation with respect to crown class, tree height and species. All remote sensing data sources correlated well, e.g. biases between remote sensing sources were around ± 1%. The field-measured tree height in general correlated well with remote sensing data sources. The uncertainties and bias of the field measurements were dependent on the tree height and crown class. Field measurements tended to underestimate codominant and intermediate trees at the approximately 1 m magnitude, whilst remote sensing data sources were robust to crown classes. Low-cost ULS used in this study, and very likely in general, may not have enough penetration capability when measuring low and mostly occluded trees, causing missed treetops. PLShh gave tree height estimates closer to the real tree height than those derived from conventional field measurements for trees above 21 m height. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Past failures of monocultures, caused by wind-throw or insect damages, and ongoing climate change currently strongly stimulate research into mixed-species stands. So far, the focus has mainly been on combinations of species with obvious complementary functional traits. However, for any generalization, a broad overview of the mixing reactions of functionally different tree species in different mixing proportions, patterns and under different site conditions is needed, including assemblages of species with rather similar demands on resources such as light. Here, we studied the growth of Scots pine and oak in mixed versus monospecific stands on 36 triplets located along a productivity gradient across Europe, reaching from Sweden to Spain and from France to Georgia. The set-up represents a wide variation in precipitation (456–1250 mm year−1), mean annual temperature (6.7–11.5 °C) and drought index by de Martonne (21–63 mm °C−1). Stand inventories and increment cores of trees stemming from 40- to 132-year-old, fully stocked stands on 0.04–0.94-ha-sized plots provided insight into how species mixing modifies stand growth and structure compared with neighbouring monospecific stands. On average, the standing stem volume was 436 and 360 m3 ha−1 in the monocultures of Scots pine and oak, respectively, and 418 m3 ha−1 in the mixed stands. The corresponding periodical annual volume increment amounted to 10.5 and 9.1 m3 ha−1 year−1 in the monocultures and 10.5 m3 ha−1 year−1 in the mixed stands.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Xylem hydraulic traits of native Quercus robur are more sensitive to previous-summer drought than those of alien Robinia pseudoacacia. The latter modulates vessel traits and ring porosity to cope with inter-annual climate variability, and is less affected by extreme events. This suggests that R. pseudoacacia might be more competitive under future drier conditions. Context: Forest management strategies require knowledge on how co-occurring native and alien species respond to unprecedented climate conditions, which can severely affect xylem conductivity and tree performance. Aims: We aimed at quantitatively comparing xylem anatomical traits of co-occurring native Quercus robur and alien Robinia pseudoacacia and assessing similarities and differences in their response to climate variability. Methods: We analyzed tree-ring anatomy and built chronologies of several parameters related to vessel number, size, and theoretical conductivity. Mean chronologies for each parameter were correlated to monthly temperature and precipitation data for the period 1954–2005 and within 30-year moving windows. We also assessed responses to extreme conditions in 2003. Results: Quercus robur showed typical ring-porous vessel distribution, while R. pseudoacacia modulated vessel size and number year by year, frequently showing semi-ring porous appearance. Previous rainy summers increased size of large vessels in Q. robur, and number of large vessels in R. pseudoacacia. In winter, R. pseudoacacia was sensitive to water excess. High temperature in March increased vessel size in Q. robur, but reduced it in R. pseudoacacia. The 2003 summer heatwave strongly reduced vessel size and number in the following year in Q. robur, but had much less effect on R. pseudoacacia. Conclusion: Quercus robur xylem traits are more influenced by both inter-annual climate variability and extreme events than those of R. pseudoacacia. Lower performance under dry conditions might reduce competitiveness of Q. robur in the future, slowing down the natural replacement of the invasive pioneer R. pseudoacacia by later-stage Q. robur.
