[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Irregularity of geological variables over adjacent rock units makes the standardization and continuity of base metal spatial distribution uncertain. Previous approaches to predict preferable locations of minerale occurence had often been based on systematic data-grid-network sampling. The St.Catherine region in south Sinai has moderate deposits of sulphide mineralization. Comprehensive studies of sulphide mineralization found in the area provide evidence that this mineralization is controlled by three factors : (1) base-metal concentration distribution, (2) structure alteration and (3) intensity. Variables of each controlling factor have been represented by vector layers and then integrated and analysed using a geographic information system to produce mineral potential maps for the study area. Variables of each controlling factor were analysed for each rock type individually. This approach was used to overcome problems due to the geochemical irregularities of various rock units. Field verification of the integrated mineral potential maps confirmed the presence of copper sulphide in the vicinity of St. Catherine. It was concluded that the maps could be used to define suitable locations for sulphide mineralization exploration. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Wildfires are a major environmental problem in many parts of the World, includinq some European countries around the Mediterranean where large forest fires have often spread uncontrollably ut frightenting rates in recent years. Such fires play a critical role in many aspects of ecosystem functioning, such as biodiversity and hydrology. They can destroy large tracts of the landscapes, as well as triggering the release of considerable amounts of the main greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, thereby affecting the global atmospheric chemistry of our planet. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) While accurate information on ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange is available at eddy covariance flux tower sites, method, methods to expand predictions of C02 and energy exchange to regional or global scales with high fidelity are lacking. The main objective of this study was to examine the applicability of land surface and atmospheric products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for assessing the spatial variation in C02 and water vapor fluxes for cloudless agricultural land pixels at the Island of Zealand, Denmark. The spatial distribution of green leaf area index, directbeam ark: diffuse solar radiation and air humidity was inferred on the basis of late morning MODIS data that was combined with afternoon AVHRR data to resolve the diurnal variation in air and surface temperature. These variables were used in a coupled "twoleaf' ecosystem model operating at an hourly time scale. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was strongly correlated with field measurements of green leaf area index (r2=0.91) and remained sensitive to variations in green biomass up to green leaf area indices of 45. Evaluation against standard meteorological data showed that instantaneous estimates of air temperature, actual vapor pressure and incoming solar radiation could be retrieved with overall root mean square errors of 2.5°C, 138.3 Pa and 47.7 Wm2, respectively. The combination of late morning and afternoon inferences made it possible to resolve the diurnal course in key model parameters, and predicted rates of ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange were comparable to eddy covariance measurements at a single flux tower. A large spatial diversity in C02 and water vapor exchange was maintained throughout the study period due to significant regional variations in meteorological input variables and large spatial differences in canopy development. The results of this study stress the necessity of pixel based estimates for an accurate evaluation of regional budgets of C02 and water vapor exchange. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) The interannual variation of global vegetation net primary production (NPP), which is crucial to understanding the role of terrestrial biosphere in the global carbon cycle, is still poorly understood. Currently, remote sensing emerges as a useful tool for estimating NPP through monitoring global vegetation distribution and growth. The objective of this study was to utilize the multi-year monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset of 1987-1997 from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) to investigate the interannual variation in productivity of global vegetation due to climate variation, human activities, and environmental events. A decision tree algorithm based on simple metrics (minimum, maximum, mean and amplitude) was employed to classify the global vegetation from NDVI data and obtain the annual vegetation growth areas. Then, annual NPP was computed using the annual vegetation growth areas and the predefined NPP coefficients given in a 1990 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCQ) report. The NPP exhibited a slightly increasing trend through the 11 years. However, interannual variations were observed to be mainly determined by variation in growth of tropical and temperate evergreen forests. These fluctuations were consistently correlated to El Niño/La Niña events. Although the interannual variation in primary productivity of global vegetation is expected to influence the atmospheric C02 concentration over the one-decade period, it is unlikely to have solely caused the anomalously low growth in 1992-1993. The adopted methodology enabled close examination of variability in vegetation growth at the biome scale as well as at global scale.
