Automated methods included commercial DEM-based routines and different parameterizations of four enhanced methods: stream burning, normalized excavation, surface reconditioning, and normalized reconditioning. Un-enhanced methods resulted in individual watershed boundaries with some gross discrepancies in watershed size relative to manual delineations (error rate of 0.22 > 25 percent difference compared to manual) and significantly different watershed size distributions (Mann-Whitney U p = 0.012). Integrating mapped streams through enhanced methods substantially improved correspondence with manual watersheds (error rates of only 0.08-0.02 > 25 percent difference). Analysis of cropland area among methods showed a significant difference between manual estimates and un-enhanced estimates (p = 0.049) that was corrected using enhanced algorithms. Subsequent analysis of percent cropland revealed that measurements of land cover proportions were not always affected by delineation errors. However, differences were large enough to influence regressions with stream nitrate-N at the 90 percent confidence level within one physiographic province. Enhanced delineations produced statistical relationships between percent cropland and nitrate-N concentrations consistent with manual delineations. The results provide support for enhanced automated watershed delineation within the Chesapeake Basin and suggest that normalized excavation can be an effective augmentation of existing stream burning and reconditioning procedures. Note de contenu : 1. PRESENTATION DE LA PLANETE MARS

[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Soil colour carries important information regarding the soil's chemical and physical properties. However, common practices for measuring soil colour, either by Munsell charts or by field/laboratory spectrometers, are insufficient, due to the subjective and nonquantitative character of the Munsell charts, and to the high cost and inconvenience of field spectrometers. We present herein, a method to characterize the colour of soil samples, and related chemical and physical properties of the soil, using a digital camera, and an array of coloured plastic chips, that are used for calibration purposes. Using 370 samples of sandy soils, we have demonstrated that both RGB values from digital images and their derived soil indices, correlate highly with similar measurements performed by a field spectrometer. When checked against free iron oxide content and against the percentage of fine particles in a subsample set of 42 soils, the redness index as measured by the digital camera gave similar or better correlations than those obtained from a field spectrometer, against both free iron oxides and fine particle contents (R2 of 89% for the iron oxides, and of for the fine particles). We propose the use of a digital camera as a field analytical tool to determine precisely: soil colour, iron oxide and fine particle content. Further study in this direction, with other soil population and more soil properties, is strongly advised in order to launch this as a vastly applicable and generic method. [Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to use Landsat Thematic Mapper TM data combined with surface measurements for mapping water quality parameters of Burullus Lake. Water samples were collected in the field at the same time of satellite image acquisition (April, 1997). TM bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and band ratios 1/4, 3/2, 2/1, 4/2, 4/3, 3/4, 7/5 and principal components of TM bands 1-4 (PC1 and PC2) were compared with in situ measurements and laboratory analysis of water samples. The water quality of interest included, Cl-, K+, Na+, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Salinity, Secchi disc and water depth. Also, the percentage of organic matter in bottom sediments and texture (sand, silt, clay) analyses are used in the evaluation processes. Correlation and regression models were developed between each of the water quality parameter measurements and the radiance of image data. Some water quality parameters were significantly correlated with TM radiance data. Subsequently, multiple linear regression models were used to prepare digital cartographic products depicting the water quality over the entire study area.
