[Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (auteur) High-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) and airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data are widely used for deriving 3D spatial information. However, the 3D spatial information derived from them in the same area can be inconsistent. Considering HRSI and LiDAR datasets taken from metropolitan areas as a case study, this paper presents a novel approach to the geometric integration of HRSI and LiDAR data to reduce their inconsistencies and improve their geopositioning accuracy. First, the influences of HRSI’s individual rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) on geopositioning accuracies are analyzed and the RPCs that dominate those accuracies are identified. The RPCs are then used as inputs in the geometric integration model together with the tie points identified in stereo images and LiDAR ground points. A local vertical constraint and a local horizontal constraint are also incorporated in the model to ensure vertical and horizontal consistency between the two datasets. The model improves the dominating RPCs and the ground coordinates of the LiDAR points, decreasing the inconsistencies between the two datasets and improving their geopositioning accuracy. Experiments were conducted using ZY-3 and Pleiades-1 imagery and the corresponding airborne LiDAR data in Hong Kong. The results verify that the geometric integration model effectively improves the geopositioning accuracies of both types of imagery and the LiDAR points. Furthermore, the model enables the full comparative and synergistic use of remote sensing imagery and laser scanning data collected from different platforms and sensors. [Termes IGN] milieu urbainRésumé : (Auteur) The reconstruction of urban climate is still challenging to climatologists in spite of over five decades of research including direct data measurement and model building. Methods for measuring and monitoring urban climate have strengths and weaknesses depending on the application. The mapping of patterns of urban heat stress over a city is not useful if the patterns depicted apply only to the time of data acquisition. Since thermal satellite sensors can now provide detailed temperature data covering whole cities and beyond, their adoption in urban planning depends on demonstrating their relevance to commonly prevailing conditions. This research investigates and presents a methodology based on four summertime ASTER thermal satellite images of Hong Kong for urban heat stress mapping at detailed level. It demonstrates that satellite images obtained under certain climatic conditions, and accompanied by adequate ‘in situ’ ground data, can provide a basis for an operational heat stress mapping system. The temporal limitation of thermal satellite images is examined for both day and nighttime images by comparison of image-derived air temperatures with ground data representing extended periods and other hot days and nights outside the image acquisition times. The nighttime images were found to be more representative of air temperature at other times than the daytime images, due to a more stable boundary layer, with lower wind speeds and temperature inversion at night. The nighttime images showed high and significant correlations with ground level air temperatures for an average 13-h period surrounding the image time 10.42pm, from 6 pm to 4–8 am the next day. Additionally they were highly and significantly correlated with ground air temperature distributions on 93% of all hot summer nights in the same years. Therefore the nighttime images can be considered representative of a commonly occurring summer nighttime situation in Hong Kong, and can be used to determine the locations of areas where temperatures commonly exceed hot weather warning thresholds. Notably, the images were better able than climate stations to represent areas in the urbanized Kowloon Peninsula and several smaller satellite towns which exceeded hot weather warning thresholds. Many areas exceeded the thresholds, even when no hot weather warning was in force, due to the unrepresentative location of climate stations. The images were also more able than climate stations to indicate the hottest and coolest areas over the Hong Kong territory, thereby enabling measurement of the magnitude and extent of the urban heat island. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The recently available space-borne SAR sensor, PALSAR, is more promising than its predecessor JERS-1 for biomass estimation because of its long wavelength (L-band), and its ability to provide data with different polarizations, varying incidence angles and higher spatial resolutions. This research investigates the potential of two-date dual polarization (HH and HV) SAR imagery for biomass estimation using different kinds of texture processing and different combinations of single and dual polarization ratios. The investigation is conducted in a mountainous, sub-tropical study area where biomass levels are far beyond the previously recognized saturation levels for L-band SAR images, and forest is a mixture of native and non-native species and plantations. We analyzed two-date SAR data with four steps of image processing, including raw data processing in various combinations, texture measurement parameters of HH and HV polarizations, texture measurement parameters of HH and HV together (both jointly and as a ratio), and a ratio of two-date texture parameters along with a single and two-date ratio. When the processed images were compared with ground data from 50 plots, the performance from raw data processing was low, with adjusted r2 = 0.22, but after all four processing steps, promising model accuracy (adjusted r2 = 0.90 and RMSE = 28.58 t/ha) and validation accuracy (using the Leave-One-Out-Cross-Validation) with adjusted r2 = 0.88 and RMSE = 35.69 t/ha, were achieved from the combination of single- and two-date polarization ratios of texture parameters. The strong performance achieved indicates that L-band dual-polarization (HH and HV) SAR data from PALSAR has great potential for biomass estimation, far beyond the previously reported L-band saturation point for biomass. This result is attributed to the synergy among texture processing and dual polarization on the one hand, which were able to average out random speckle noise, and the use of ratio instead of absolute quantities, due to its well known ability to reduce forest structural and terrain effects. The additional use of two-date SAR data with these processing techniques was able to add complementary information derived from biomass response in both wet and dry seasons. Thus overall, undesirable image noise and terrain effects were reduced. It covers geodetic control, deformation monitoring surveys, detail mapping, geometric modelling, setting-out, as-built surveys and total quality management (TQM). Recent advances include an integrative approach to: (1) combine measurements collected by geodetic and geotechnical systems including interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) in monitoring ground displacements and structural deformation at local and regional scales; (2) map geospatial data into computer aided design (CAD) formats and geographic information systems (GIS) by both conventional and mobile surveying systems; (3) collect as-built data of railway tracks and tunnels by positioning instruments, track sensors and laser scanners together; (4) incorporate Outsource Plan into the TQM system under ISO 9001:2008. [Termes IGN] TorontoRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to assess the accuracy of using stereo high resolution satellite imagery for extracting the highway profiles and plans and constructing accurate 3D highway visualization model. Two stereo-pair IKONOS satellite images for Hong Kong and Toronto are geo-referenced by using a number of ground control points acquired by global positioning system measurements. A polynomial-based generic pushbroom model and rational function model are used to perform the sensor orientation, respectively. The highway alignments are extracted semi-automatically using stereoscopic measurements, and a 3D digital model along the highway is constructed. It is found that the highway alignments retrieved from the stereo IKONOS images result in less than 1-m root mean squared error in most of the cases in the horizontal and vertical directions. Near half-pixel accuracy can be achieved by using pansharpening stereo satellite imagery and under the condition that clear road surface markings can be identified along the highway.
