[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The northern part of Lantau Island in Hong Kong is undergoing very rapid development following completion of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok on the island. This development is adjacent to a range of steeply sloping hills that experience levels of annual rainfall in the range of 2000-2400mm. Rainfall-induced landslides on this steeply sloping natural terrain are therefore potential hazards to property developments downslope. The objective of this study is to characterize the initiation process and the subsequent travel distance of the landslides resulting from recent rainstorms, by integrating aerial photogrammetry with GIS. These landslides, which occurred during the 18 July 1992 and 4-5 November 1993 rainstorms, were interpreted from sequential aerial photographs. Data on these landslides were collected to form a landslide database. Such data, together with information on geology, slope gradient, elevation, slope aspect, slope shape, and vegetation cover were entered into a Geographical Information System (GIS), to determine the geologic and geomorphologic characteristics of the landslide source and to estimate the travel distance of landslide debris. It is demonstrated that this integrated approach of GIS and aerial photogrammetry could serve as an effective means of landslide characterization. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) It has been widely recognized that, in order to automate the map generalization process, cartographic knowledge needs to be formalized. One method of knowledge acquisition is to analyse existing maps. Previous studies have concentrated on describing the phenomena on the surface. A typical example is the percentage change of the number of symbols or the percentage of open space on smaller scale maps. This study aims to go one step further, i.e. to analyse the association such changes with thematic attributes. In this study, road features on topographic maps of Hong Kong from 1:1000 to 1:200 000 are studied; six types of thematic attributes, i.e. 'type', 'length', 'width', 'number of lanes', 'number of traffic ways' and 'connectivity', are considered; and two statistic parameters, Lambda and Somers' Delta, are employed. It has been discovered that the dependence of road elimination on these attributes occurs in the following order : type (0.73), length (0.53), number of lanes (0.48), number of traffic directions (0.41), width (0.36) and connectivity (0.19). If these numbers are normalized into percentages, then these values become: type (27%), length (20%), number of lanes (18%), number of traffic directions (15%), width (13%) and connectivity (7%). Such results could be used to formulate an overall weight to determine whether a particular road should be deleted, merged or combined in the generalization process, in order to retain a certain proportion of roads at a smaller scale. [Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur)Distributed virtual environments (DVE) are environments that ore not only used for managing and delivering m multi-source, multi-dimensional, geographical information, but also enable geographically distributed users to navigate in a 3D space, and to interact with objects and with other online users. In this paper, we design DVES to disseminate 2D and 3D data and to implement public participation in the management of the country parks in Hong Kong. The system framework, geo-data model, and user's interface are discussed for designing DVES. Based on the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), Java, and VRML External Authoring Interface (EAI) classes, a balanced client/server architecture is employed. In view of multi-source and multi-dimensional data, the object-oriented approach is utilized to design 3D geo-object models for web-based distribution. Considering the Internet bandwidth and performance of client computers, we adopt multi-block and multi-level approaches to the design of 3D geo-objects. The user's interface provides capabilities for implementing 2D and 3D view, data query and analysis, object addition/removal, and 3D avatar-based and text-based communication. This paper presents a case study of the Shing Mun Country Park in Hong Kong, where a prototype DVE, called "VirtualPark", was developed.
