[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) An artificial rainfall event was applied to a forested slope in Ruedlingen, northern Switzerland. The experiment triggered a landslide which resulted in mobilising about 130 m3 of debris. The event was monitored by a photogrammetric network of four cameras, operating at 5 to 8 frames per second, in order to quantify spatial and temporal changes by tracking tennis balls pegged into the ground. Image measurements were performed using automated image matching methods, implemented through a software package developed in-house. Three-dimensional coordinates of the target points were estimated by running a customised type of bundle adjustment, achieving a positioning precision of + 1·8 cm. [Termes IGN] incendie de forêtRésumé : (Auteur) Infrared (IR) remote sensing is increasingly used in studies of vegetation fire behavior, and high spatiotemporal resolution investigations often require data to be collected from airborne platforms, for example, standard helicopters. This paper aims to extend the range of conditions under which low-cost “handheld” thermal imaging cameras can be employed in such studies, particularly by enabling the effective and efficient geometric correction of thermal imagery collected from such devices, even when viewing far off-nadir (e.g., out of a side door or window). The approach is based on the automated detection of a set of fixed thermal “ground control points,” coupled with the use of a linear transformation matrix for warping the raw IR imagery to a fixed coordinate system. The output set of geometrically corrected brightness temperature and radiance images can be used to derive fire radiative power (FRP) and flame front rate of spread (ROS). We demonstrate and test our IR image processing methods on a series of case study fires, ranging from a small-scale laboratory to a 945-m2 outdoor experimental burn. We compare mapped information on FRP obtained from simultaneous nadir and off-nadir views, where we find differences that are in part controlled by flame structure and/or view angle. In the large open fire case, we compare the mapped fire radiative energy and ROS to simultaneously acquired aerial photography that provides the position of fuel and flames in high detail, and we demonstrate how these data sets can be used to explore various aspects of fire behavior. A case study was undertaken following a very destructive wildfire that occurred in Parnitha, Greece, July 2007, for which we acquired satellite images from LANDSAT, ASTER, and IKONOS. Additionally, we created spatially degraded satellite data over a range of coarser resolutions using resampling techniques. The panchromatic (1 m) and multispectral component (4 m) of IKONOS were merged using the Gram-Schmidt spectral sharpening method. This very high-resolution imagery served as the basis to estimate the cover percentage of burned areas, bare land and vegetation at pixel level, by applying the maximum likelihood classification algorithm. Finally, multiple linear regression models were fit to estimate each land-cover fraction as a function of surface reflectance values of the original and the spatially degraded satellite images. The main findings of our research were: (a) the Near Infrared (NIR) and Short-wave Infrared (SWIR) are the most important channels to estimate the percentage of burned area, whereas the NIR and red channels are the most important to estimate the percentage of vegetation in fire-affected areas; (b) when the bi-spectral space consists only of NIR and SWIR, then the NIR ground reflectance value plays a more significant role in estimating the percent of burned areas, and the SWIR appears to be more important in estimating the percent of vegetation; and (c) semi-burned areas comprising 45–55% burned area and 45–55% vegetation are spectrally closer to burned areas in the NIR channel, whereas those areas are spectrally closer to vegetation in the SWIR channel. These findings, at least partially, are attributed to the fact that: (i) completely burned pixels present low variance in the NIR and high variance in the SWIR, whereas the opposite is observed in completely vegetated areas where higher variance is observed in the NIR and lower variance in the SWIR, and (ii) bare land modifies the spectral signal of burned areas more than the spectral signal of vegetated areas in the NIR, while the opposite is observed in SWIR region of the spectrum where the bare land modifies the spectral signal of vegetation more than the burned areas because the bare land and the vegetation are spectrally more similar in the NIR, and the bare land and burned areas are spectrally more similar in the SWIR. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors represent an alternative to aerial photography for delineating floods in built-up environments where flood risk is highest. However, even with currently available SAR image resolutions of 3 m and higher, signal returns from man-made structures hamper the accurate mapping of flooded areas. Enhanced image processing algorithms and a better exploitation of image archives are required to facilitate the use of microwave remote-sensing data for monitoring flood dynamics in urban areas. In this paper, a hybrid methodology combining backscatter thresholding, region growing, and change detection (CD) is introduced as an approach enabling the automated, objective, and reliable flood extent extraction from very high resolution urban SAR images. The method is based on the calibration of a statistical distribution of “open water” backscatter values from images of floods. Images acquired during dry conditions enable the identification of areas that are not “visible” to the sensor (i.e., regions affected by “shadow”) and that systematically behave as specular reflectors (e.g., smooth tarmac, permanent water bodies). CD with respect to a reference image thereby reduces overdetection of inundated areas. A case study of the July 2007 Severn River flood (UK) observed by airborne photography and the very high resolution SAR sensor on board TerraSAR-X highlights advantages and limitations of the method. Even though the proposed fully automated SAR-based flood-mapping technique overcomes some limitations of previous methods, further technological and methodological improvements are necessary for SAR-based flood detection in urban areas to match the mapping capability of high-quality aerial photography. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Global change is of key scientific interest, and satellite altimetry recently became a major tool to provide information on sea level on a continuous and worldwide basis. However, any error in the radar altimeter data, and more specifically any error in the altimeter drift, would directly map as an undetected error in the derived mean sea level trend. This explains why satellite altimeter calibration is such an important metrological challenge for all satellite missions such as Jason-2 (US/France), Cryosat-2 (Europe), HY-2A (China), and many others.
On January 20–21, 2011, an international meeting was organized in Chania, Crete, on the following theme: “satellite altimetry calibration and deformation monitoring with GNSS”. Due to the importance of the scientific problems discussed during this meeting and to recent new methods proposed for altimeter calibration, the idea of a Special Issue in Advances in Space Research was proposed. An international call for participation was issued shortly after, and 27 manuscripts were submitted from authors from six different countries. All manuscripts went through the standard peer-review process for ASR with a minimum of two referees for each paper.
Many topics were addressed for this Special Issue: satellite altimeter calibration using dedicated GPS receivers, tide gauges or buoys, calibration sites, calibration on lakes or rivers, coastal altimetry, and crustal deformation using GPS techniques.
We thank the contribution of each author and extend our gratitude to all the referees; those who agreed to be identified by name are listed at the end of this issue.Numéro de notice : A2013-838 Affiliation des auteurs : LASTIG LAREG (2012-mi2018) Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.asr.2013.01.004 Date de publication en ligne : 11/01/2013 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.asr.2013.01.004 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=91300
