[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Natural hazards like landslides, avalanches, floods and debris flows can result in enormous property damage and human casualties in mountainous regions. Switzerland has always been exposed to a wide variety of natural hazards mostly located in its alpine valleys. Recent natural disasters comprising avalanches, floods, debris flows and slope instabilities led to substantial loss of life and damage to property infrastructure, cultural heritage and environment. In order to offer a solid technical infrastructure, a new concept and expert-tool based on a integrated web-based database/GIS structure is being developed under HazNETH. Given the HazNETH database design contemplates the detection and mapping of diagnostic features from remote sensors (e.g., ground, air and space borne), this paper analyses the use of rernote sensing data in landslides studies during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, including a discussion of its potential and research challenges as result of new operational and forthcoming technologies such as the very high spatial resolution optical and infrared imagery of Ikonos, Quickbird IRS CartoSat-1, ALOS, the satellite based interferometric SAR (InSAR and DInSAR of Radarsat, ERS, Envisat, TerraSAR-X, Cosmo/SkyMed, ALOS), micro-satellites like the Pléiades, DMC, RapidEye, airborne LASER altimetry or ground-based differential interferometric SAR. The use of remote sensing data, whether air-, satellite- or ground-based varies according to three main stages of a landslide relate study, namely a) detection and identification; b) monitoring; c) spatial analysis and hazard prediction. Accordingly, this paper presents and discusses previous applications of remote sensing tools as related to these three main phases, proposing a conceptual framework for the contribution of remote sensing to the design of databases for natural hazards like debris flows, and identifying areas for further research. [Termes IGN] validité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) NASA's flagship Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra satellite was launched in 1999 and began sensing in March 2000 coincident with the first major field campaign of the Southern Africa Regional Science Initiative (SAFARI 2000). Terra's five sensors were used to support SAFARI 2000 studies on the southern African environment, and SAFARI 2000's ground, aircraft and independent satellite data sets were used in turn to validate and improve the remote sensing products derived from Terra. In this article, we review southern Africa's natural and cultural features that we believe formed an optimal environment in which to test the EOS program (including new sensors, products, validation, scientific research, education and outreach). Through the course of the text, we reference and summarize the articles in the SAFARI 2000 Special Issue to highlight the natural links between remote sensing science and the subcontinent's characteristics. We also note contemporary forces of change in the southern Africa landscape whose impacts will challenge the remote monitoring capabilities of future sensors and scientists. The article concludes with a brief description of SAFARI 2000 data resources and access provisions.

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A systematic approach of understanding the terrain characteristics at the regional level and then narrowing down to the target areas for detailed mapping not only improves the quality of information but also saves considerably time, cost and manpower. For such activities, satellite-based remote sensing technology has become an efficient tool, due to its synoptic/multi-spectral/multi-temporaI coverage. In the present study, initially, a regional level natural resources assessment was carried out using coarse scale satellite data and then based on the results, a representative site was identified for detailed studies towards resources potential evaluation and to identify the areas undergoing calamities like forest fire. This multi stage study was carried out for a part of Madhya Pradesh, India. The regional set up of the study area was carried out on 1:250,000 scale using IRS LISS III standard FCC analog and digital data. A representative site named 'Gorna'sub-basin of the Son River, was selected for the detailed study at 1:50,000 scale, to mainly address the natural resources related problems of the region. The different thematic maps prepared were integrated in a GIS environment with suitable modeling for ground water prospect zone demarcation and forest fire risk zonation. Using the digital database of various themes, it could also be used appropriately for deriving other developmental plans. The result of the study demonstrate the utility of remote sensing technology for assessment of natural resources potentials at regional and local levels.
