The precision of GNSS-acoustic positioning, a technique that employs the distance intersection, is determined by the positioning geometry formed by the ship’s track lines with respect to the seafloor station and the errors in the measurements. In the context of a shallow sea trial, we studied three key techniques in GNSS-acoustic positioning: the optimal geometric configuration, differencing techniques for acoustic observations and depth constraints offered by pressure gauges. The results showed that the optimal geometric configuration is a circular track with a radius of 2‾√ times the depth plus an overhead cross-track with a length of the circle diameter. Differenced observations can improve the horizontal positioning precision but will worsen the vertical positioning precision due to the change in the geometric configuration and the elimination of vertical information if the number of observations is limited. The proposed difference strategy, that is, applying a symmetric location difference operator to the circular track and an undifference operator to the cross-track, can effectively improve the horizontal precision and avoid vertical defects. By using relative depth observations from two pressure gauges as constraints, the vertical defects of GNSS-acoustic positioning can be improved, achieving a better vertical positioning precision. Applying the proposed methods to high-quality GNSS and acoustic observations, the positioning precision of a shallow seafloor geodetic station can be better than 2 cm. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Intertidal flats lying as a buffer zone between land and sea provide critical services including protection against storm surges and coastal flooding. These environments are characterized by a continuous redistribution of sediment and changes in topography. Sea level rise, anthropogenic pressures, and their related stressors have a considerable impact on these areas and are expected to put them under more stress; hence the increased need for frequent and updated topography maps. Comparing to traditional surveying approaches, spaceborne remote sensing is able to provide topography maps more frequently with a lower cost and a higher coverage. The latter is currently considered as an established tool for measuring intertidal topography. In this study, an improved approach of the waterline method was developed to derive intertidal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The changes include a faster, more efficient and quasi-automatic detection and post-processing of waterlines. The edge detection technique consists in combining a k-means based segmentation and an active contouring procedure. This method was designed to generate closed contours in order to enable an automatization of the post-processing of the extracted waterlines. The waterlines were extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images for two bays located on the French Coast: the Arcachon lagoon and the Bay of Veys. DEMs were generated for the Arcachon Bay between 2015 and 2018, and for the Bay of Veys between 2016 and 2018 using satellite acquisitions made during summer (low storm activity period). The comparison of the generated DEMs with lidar observations showed an error of about 19–25 cm. This study also demonstrated that the waterline method applied to Sentinel images is suitable for monitoring the morpho-sedimentary evolution in intertidal areas. By comparing the DEMs generated between 2016 and 2018, the Arcachon Bay and the Bay of Veys experienced net volume losses of 1.12 × 106 m3 and 0.70 × 106 m3 respectively. The generated DEMs provide useful and needed information for several scientific applications (e.g., sediment balance, hydrodynamic modelling), but also for authorities and stakeholders for coastal management and implementation of ecosystem protection policies. [Termes IGN] trajectoire (véhicule non spatial)Résumé : (auteur) A positioning approach combining satellite measurements with a map representing the ground-truth trajectory is developed with the main objective of improving the availability of solutions for a mobile vehicle. For the positioning model, the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technique is augmented with an alternative map-matching to find a probable space where the true vehicle or platform position is located. Then, by using a selection criterion based on the precise carrier phase residuals, the best candidate position within the space can be determined. This process provides an accurate initial position to the PPP filter, different from the standard PPP approach that relies on a point position using the less accurate pseudorange observables. A controlled experiment of a mobile receiver navigating over a pre-defined trajectory was conducted. The results show that the approach offers an instantaneous initial convergence, eliminating the re-convergences during two GNSS obstructions of 32 and 17 seconds, while constantly keeping the solution on the correct trajectory, even when tracking 3 to 2 satellites. This approach outperforms the standard PPP and RTK solutions in terms of convergences and re-convergences. These results are corroborated when comparing the average and standard deviation of residuals to the standard PPP model. For the pseudorange residuals, improvements of 17.5 cm and 24.3 cm in the average and standard deviation respectively were achieved. The carrier phase residuals standard deviation of the proposed approach was 3 cm better than that of the standard PPP. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) In this article, we borrow from the blind noise parameter estimation (BNPE) methodology early developed in the image processing field an original and innovative no-reference approach to estimate digital elevation model (DEM) vertical error parameters without resorting to a reference DEM. The challenges associated with the proposed approach related to the physical nature of the error and its multifactor structure in DEM are discussed in detail. A suitable multivariate method is then developed for estimating the error in gridded DEM. It is built on a recently proposed vectorial BNPE method for estimating spatially correlated noise using noise informative areas and fractal Brownian motion. The new multivariate method is derived to estimate the effect of the stacking procedure and that of the epipolar line error on local (fine-scale) standard deviation and autocorrelation function width of photogrammetric DEM measurement error. Applying the new estimator to Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) GDEM2 and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) World 3D DEMs, good agreement of derived estimates with results available in the literature is evidenced. Adopted for TanDEM-X-DEM, estimates obtained agree well with the values provided in the height error map. In future works, the proposed no-reference method for analyzing DEM error can be extended to a larger number of predictors for accounting for other factors influencing remote sensing (RS) DEM accuracy.
