[Termes IGN] ventIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been demonstrated invaluable in observing the global ocean winds and waves. SAR images acquired by multiple sensors are employed, including Sentinel-1(S-1), Envisat/ASAR, Gaofen-3 and Radarsat-2. This thesis reviews the commonly used SAR parameters (NRCS and azimuth cutoff) in the first part. A series of calibration steps are required to obtain a proper NRCS and assessment of NRCS is carried out for S-1wave mode (WV). It turns out that WV is poorly calibrated and is thus re-calibrated to obtain accurate NRCS. Azimuth cut off is demonstrated to be complementary to NRCS and can account for the sea state impact on the wind retrieval. Based on the available fully polarimetric SAR products, azimuth cut off is found to vary greatly with polarizations. The present SAR mapping transformation is sufficient to interpret the co-polarized azimuth cut off, while not for the cross-polarization. With the limitations of SAR imaging in mind, a new parameter is proposed and defined based on the SAR image cross-spectra, termed as MACS. The imaginary part of MACS is found to be a signed quantity relative to the wind direction. Given this dependence, an independent wind retrieval algorithm is expected to benefit. The magnitude of MACS is able to aid for estimate of modulation function of SAR mapping. In addition, MACS also gives promising results regarding the global wave studies. The global signatures of MACS at various wave lengths are well representative of the winds distributions, spatially and seasonally. MACS of long waves shows greater values over the storm tracks while the shorter waves are mostly within the trader winds. These results are expected to help evaluate the model outputs and complement further studies of the global wave spectral climate. Data continuity in the coming 10 years shall extend the study towards longer duration. Note de contenu : I- Background and study of the existing SAR parameters

[Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) Changes in sea surface roughness are usually associated with a change in the sea surface wind field. This interaction has been exploited to measure sea surface wind speed by scatterometry. A number of features on the sea surface associated with changes in roughness can be observed by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) because of the change in Bragg backscatter of the radar signal by damping of the resonant ocean capillary waves. With various radar frequencies, resolutions, and modes of polarization, sea surface features have been analyzed in numerous campaigns, bringing various datasets together, thus allowing for new insights into small-scale processes at a larger areal coverage. This Special Issue aims at investigating sea surface features detected by high spatial resolution radar systems, such as SAR. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (auteur) This study investigates the means, variability, and trends in integrated water vapour (IWV) from two modern reanalyses (ERA-Interim and MERRA-2) from 1980 to 2016 and ground-based GPS data from 1995 to 2010. It is found that the mean distributions and inter-annual variability in IWV in the reanalyses and GPS are consistent, even in regions of strong gradients. ERA-Interim is shown to exhibit a slight moist bias in the extra-tropics and a slight dry bias in the tropics (both on the order of 0.5 to 1 kg m−2) compared to GPS. ERA-Interim is also generally drier than MERRA-2 over the ocean and within the tropics. Differences in variability and trends are pointed out at a few GPS sites. These differences can be due to representativeness errors (for sites located in coastal regions and regions of complex topography), gaps and inhomogeneities in the GPS series (due to equipment changes), or potential inhomogeneities in the reanalyses (due to changes in the observing system). Trends in IWV and surface temperature in ERA-Interim and MERRA-2 are shown to be consistent, with positive IWV trends generally correlated with surface warming, but MERRA-2 presents a more general global moistening trend compared to ERA-Interim. Inconsistent trends are found between the two reanalyses over Antarctica and most of the Southern Hemisphere, and over central and northern Africa. The uncertainty in current reanalyses remains quite high in these regions, where few in situ observations are available, and the spread between models is generally important. Inter-annual and decadal variations in IWV are also shown to be strongly linked with variations in the atmospheric circulation, especially in arid regions, such as northern Africa and Western Australia, which add uncertainty in the trend estimates, especially over the shorter period. In these regions, the Clausius–Clapeyron scaling ratio is found not to be a good humidity proxy for inter-annual variability and decadal trends.
Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] ventIndex. décimale : 30.70 Navigation et positionnement Résumé : (auteur) The dominant navigation system for small civilian UAVs today is based on integration of inertial navigation system (INS) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS). This strategy works well to navigate the UAV, as long as proper reception of GNSS signal is maintained. However, when GNSS outage occurs, the INS-based navigation solution drifts very quickly, considering the limited quality of IMU(s) employed in INS for small UAVs. In beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights, this poses the serious danger of losing the UAV and its eventual falling down. Limited payload capacity and cost for small UAVs, as well as the need for operating in different conditions, with limited visibility for example, make it challenging to find a solution to reach higher levels of navigation autonomy based on conventional approaches. This thesis aims to improve the accuracy of autonomous navigation for small UAVs by at least one order of magnitude. The proposed novel approach employs vehicle dynamic model (VDM) as process model within navigation system, and treats data from other sensors such as IMU, barometric altimeter, and GNSS receiver, whenever available, as observations within the system. Such improvement comes with extra effort required to determine the VDM parameters for any specific UAV. This work investigates the internal capability of the proposed system for estimating VDM parameters as part of the augmented state vector within an extended Kalman filter (EKF) as the estimator. This reduces the efforts required to setup such navigation system that is platform dependent. Multiple experimental flights using two custom made fixed-wing UAVs are presented together with Monte-Carlo simulations. The results reveal improvements of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude in navigation accuracy during GNSS outages of a few minutes' duration. Computational cost for the proposed VDM-based navigation does not exceed 3~times that of conventional INS-based systems, which establishes its applicability for online application. A global sensitivity analysis is presented, spotting the VDM parameters with higher influence on navigation performance. This provides insight for design of calibration procedures. The proposed VDM-based navigation system can be interesting for professional UAVs from at least two points of view. Firstly, it adds little to no extra hardware and cost to the UAV. Secondly and more importantly, it might be currently the only way to reach such significant improvement in navigation autonomy for small UAVs regardless of visibility conditions and electromagnetic signals reception. Possibly, such environmental condition independence for navigation system may be needed to obtain certifications from legal authorities to expand UAV applications to new types of mission.
