[Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS) and Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) standards define a way of dynamically producing maps from vector data. However, this dynamic process often results in maps that are not easily readable when the underlying data are automatically represented at smaller scales than the original data were intended for. Fortunately, the SLD rules can be decoded, the symbolization rules translated into geometrical features, and cartographic conflicts detected and partially solved. The conflicting features can be identified based on the use of few basic geospatial analysis functions. After a solution that minimizes these conflicts emerges, new SLD rules are generated that attempt to visually solve the cartographic conflicts. The new SLD rules can then be applied on-demand by a cartographic proxy server that rewrites the incoming GetMap requests to use the new SLD rules. The process for improving the WMS cartographic output has several stages, grouped into preparatory steps (basic automatic generalization methods, rough scale-dependent SLD symbolization) and real-time processing steps (detection of cartographic conflicts, conflicts solution and generation of new SLD rules). The entire process of detecting and solving cartographic conflicts in the maps produced by WMS through the use of overriding SLD rules is described in detail. Furthermore, it is conceivable to transform the conflicting features into spatial objects containing methods for discovering appropriate SLD values that minimize conflicts. Such approaches can bring the performance of automatic detection and correction of cartographic conflicts above the threshold required for interactive visualization, thus, making the process of dynamically solving cartographic conflicts in WMS servers a viable solution. [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (auteur) Mapmaking has become widespread through the Internet, resulting in a wide range of cartographic quality. To achieve better quality, mapmaking needs tools and online services for intuitive and efficient on-demand mapping. A project team at IGN, the French National Mapping Agency, is working on producing a digital cartographic model (DCM) from various existing databases and maps on which such tools and services are based. This DCM ranges from detailed topographic maps to small general road maps. GeoServer Web Map Service capabilities were used extensively to produce quality maps with various legends. Special care was taken to make a default legend suitable for customer data overlays, both on-screen and on paper. Web-based interface prototypes were built to guide users in choosing colors and creating their own original map legends. Users can also rely on a growing catalog of harmonious color palettes and map samples as sources of inspiration. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Current web standards have facilitated the online production and publication of thematic maps as a useful aid to interpretation of spatial data and decision making. Patterns within the raw data can be highlighted with careful styling choices, which can be defined for online maps using tools such as Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) XML schema. Dynamic generation of maps and map styles extends their use beyond static publication and into exploration of data which may require multiple styles and visualisations for the same set of data. This paper explores the application of thematic styling options to online data, including mapping services such as Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)-compliant Web Mapping and Web Feature Services. In order to be relevant for both user-specified and automated styling, a prototype online service was developed to explore the generation of styling schema when given data records plus the required output data type and styling parameters. Style choices were applied on-the-fly and to inform the styling characteristics of non-spatial visualisations. A stand-alone web service to produce styling definitions requires a mechanism, such as a RESTful interface, to specify its own capabilities, accept style parameters, and produce schema. The experiments in this paper are an investigation into the requirements and possibilities for such a system. Styles were applied using point and polygon feature data as well as spatially-contextual records (for example, data that includes postal codes or suburb names but no geographical feature definitions). Functionality was demonstrated by accessing it from an online geovisualisation and analysis system. This exploration was carried out as a proof of concept for generation of a map styling web service that could be used to implement automated or manual design choices.
