[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The revision of the 1995 land cover dataset for the Vale do Sousa region, in the northwest of Portugal, was carried out by supervised classification of a multispectral image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) sensor. The nine reflective bands of ASTER were used, covering the spectral range from 0.52-2.43 um. The image was initially ortho-rectified and segmented into 51 186 objects, with an average object size of 135 pixels (about 3 ha). A total of 582 of these objects were identified for training nine land cover classes. The image was classified using an algorithm based on a fuzzy classifier, Support Vector Machines (SVM), K Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) and a Logistic Discrimination (LD) classifier. The results from the classification were evaluated using a set of 277 validation sites, independently gathered. The overall accuracy was 44.6%, for the fuzzy classifier. 70.5%, for the SVM, 60.9% for the K-NN and 72.2% for the LD classifier. The difficulty in discriminating between some of the forest land cover classes was examined by separability analysis and unsupervised classification with hierarchical clustering. The forest classes were found to overlap in the multi-spectral space defined by the nine ASTER bands used. [Termes IGN] raisonnement spatialRésumé : (Auteur) Mangroves are difficult to map accurately from satellite data by means of parametric classification because of their spectral similarity to other coastal vegetation despite their habitat being inside coastal waters. This study aims to improve the mapping accuracy through incorporation of such spatial knowledge about mangroves in the Waitemata Harbor of Auckland, New Zealand, from SPOT data. The spatial knowledge was combined with spectral knowledge in the mapping. Supervised classification was found to map stunted and lush mangroves at an accuracy of, respectively, 46.7 percent and 68.3 percent. These accuracy levels rose, respectively, to 83.3 percent and 96.7 percent after the spatial knowledge was sequentially incorporated into the mapping. A similar accuracy level was achieved from knowledge-based spatial reasoning. If integrated simultaneously with spectral knowledge, spatial knowledge did not improve the accuracy noticeably because of difficulty in gaining quality spectral knowledge. It is concluded that knowledge-based, post-classification processing considerably improves the accuracy of mapping mangroves over parametric classification. [Termes IGN] réduction géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new nonparametric feature extraction method is proposed for high-dimensional multiclass pattern recognition problems. It is based on a nonparametric extension of scatter matrices. There are at least two advantages to using the proposed nonparametric scatter matrices. First, they are generally of full rank. This provides the ability to specify the number of extracted features desired and to reduce the effect of the singularity problem. This is in contrast to parametric discriminant analysis, which usually only can extract L - 1 (number of classes minus one) features. In a real situation, this may not be enough. Second, the nonparametric nature of scatter matrices reduces the effects of outliers and works well even for nonnormal datasets. The new method provides greater weight to samples near the expected decision boundary. This tends to provide for increased classification accuracy. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a set of measures based on straight lines to assess land development levels in high-resolution (1 m) panchromatic satellite images. Most urban areas locally (such as in a 400 x 400 M2 area) exhibit a preponderance of straight-line features, generally appearing in fairly simple quasi-periodic organizations. Wilderness and rural areas produce line structures in more random spatial arrangements. We use this observation to perform an initial triage on the image to restrict the attention of subsequent more computationally intensive analyses. Statistical measures based on straight lines guide the analysis. We base these measures on length, contrast, orientation, periodicity, and location. On these, we trained and tested parametric and nonparametric classifiers. These tests were for a two-class problem (urban versus rural). However, because our ultimate goal is to extract residential regions, we then extended these ideas to address the detection of suburban regions. To do so, some use of spatial coherence is required; suburban regions are especially difficult to detect. Therefore, we introduce a decision system to perform suburban region classification via an overlapping voting method for consensus discovery. Our data were taken from regions all around the world, which underscores the robustness of our approach. Based on extensive testing, we can report very promising results in distinguishing developed areas.
