[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (auteur) Accurately classifying 3-D point clouds into woody and leafy components has been an interest for applications in forestry and ecology including the better understanding of radiation transfer between canopy and atmosphere. The past decade has seen an increase in the methods attempting to classify leaves and wood in point clouds based on radiometric or geometric features. However, classification purely based on radiometric features is sensor-specific, and the method by which the local neighborhood of a point is defined affects the accuracy of classification based on geometric features. Here, we present a leaf-wood classification method combining geometrical features defined by radially bounded nearest neighbors at multiple spatial scales in a machine learning model. We compared the performance of three different machine learning models generated by the random forest (RF), XGBoost, and lightGBM algorithms. Using multiple spatial scales eliminates the need for an optimal neighborhood size selection and defining the local neighborhood by radially bounded nearest neighbors makes the method broadly applicable for point clouds of varying quality. We assessed the model performance at the individual tree- and plot-level on field data from tropical and deciduous forests, as well as on simulated point clouds. The method has an overall average accuracy of 94.2% on our data sets. For other data sets, the presented method outperformed the methods in literature in most cases without the need for additional postprocessing steps that are needed in most of the existing methods. We provide the entire framework as an open-source python package. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (auteur) Shrubs growing in former burnt areas play two diametrically opposed roles. On the one hand, they protect the soil against erosion, promote rainwater infiltration, carbon sequestration and support animal life. On the other hand, after the shrubs’ density reaches a particular size for the canopy to touch and the shrubs’ biomass accumulates more than 10 Mg ha−1, they create the necessary conditions for severe wild fires to occur and spread. The creation of a methodology suitable to identify former burnt areas and to track shrubs’ regrowth within these areas in a regular and a multi temporal basis would be beneficial. The combined use of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) supported by dedicated land survey and field work for data collection has been identified as a suitable method to manage these tasks. The free access to Sentinel images constitutes a valuable tool for updating the GIS project and for the monitoring of regular shrubs’ accumulated biomass. Sentinel 2 VIS-NIR images are suitable to classify rural areas (overall accuracy = 79.6% and Cohen’s K = 0.754) and to create normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images to be used in association to allometric equations for the shrubs’ biomass estimation (R2 = 0.8984, p-value Numéro de notice : A2020-654 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.3390/f11050555 Date de publication en ligne : 14/05/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.3390/f11050555 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=96116

[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Automated generalization software must accommodate multi-scale representations of hydrographic networks across a variety of geographic landscapes, because scale-related hydrography differences are known to vary in different physical conditions. While generalization algorithms have been tailored to specific regions and landscape conditions by several researchers in recent years, the selection and characterization of regional conditions have not been formally defined nor statistically validated. This paper undertakes a systematic classification of landscape types in the conterminous United States to spatially subset the country into workable units, in preparation for systematic tailoring of generalization workflows that preserve hydrographic characteristics. The classification is based upon elevation, standard deviation of elevation, slope, runoff, drainage and bedrock density, soil and bedrock permeability, area of inland surface water, infiltration-excess of overland flow, and a base flow index. A seven class solution shows low misclassification rates except in areas of high landscape diversity such as the Appalachians, Rocky Mountains, and Western coastal regions. [Termes IGN] tenseurRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we propose a novel tensorial approach, namely, generalized tensor regression, for hyperspectral image classification. First, a simple and effective classifier, i.e., the ridge regression for multivariate labels, is extended to its tensorial version by taking advantages of tensorial representation. Then, the discrimination information of different modes is exploited to further strengthen the capacity of the model. Moreover, the model can be simplified and solved easily. Different from traditional tensorial methods, the proposed model can be utilized to capture not only the intrinsic structure of data in a physical sense but also the generalized relationship of data in a logical sense. Our proposed approach is shown to be effective for different classification purposes on a series of instantiations. Specifically, our experiment results with hyperspectral images collected by the airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer, the reflective optics spectrographic imaging system and the ITRES CASI-1500 demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach as compared to other tensor-based classifiers and multiple kernel learning methods. [Termes IGN] test statistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The main objective of this study to produce landslide susceptibility zones using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and support vector machine (SVM) data-driven models along the Tipari to Ghuttu highway corridors in the Garhwal Himalaya. A landslide inventory has been prepared through field surveys and LISS-IV and Landsat 8 satellite images. The datasets of 85 landslides were categorised into training and test sets. In this study 11 landslide conditioning variables were used that are; altitude, slope angle, aspect, plan curvature, topographic wetness index, normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), land use, soil texture, distance to rivers, distance to faults, and distance to the road. The result produced using MaxEnt and SVM model were subsequently validated using receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) with test sets of landslide dataset. Both the models have good prediction capabilities. MaxEnt has ROC value of 0.78 while SVM has the highest prediction rate of 0.85.
