[Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This research was designed to evaluate the operational utility of airborne video for classification accuracy assessment of satellite imagery. There are a number of logistical advantages in utilizing airborne video data particularly in remote or large catchment regions where ground accessibility can be prohibitively expensive. In a study of land cover characteristics in the Barossa Valley, South Australia comparisons of Landsat ETM+ classification accuracy assessments were derived from both airborne video and standard ground truthing point sampling techniques. The airborne video data was obtained by randomly frame grabbing 243 individual scenes along four predetermined flight lines and computing classification accuracies and error matrix statistics. These results were then compared with similar statistics derive ' dfirom 180 randomly chosen ground sampling sites. The costs involved in obtaining both sets of data per sampling point were also calculated. The results demonstrated that the airborne video data provided similar degrees of accuracy assessment at a cost of approximately one seventh that of the ground survey with the added advantages of increased data collection, overall improved site accessibility and the ability to continually store and review the data. The cost differentiation would become even more pronounced in more remote and inaccessible areas. In general the results of the unsupervised Landsat ETM+ classification were rather poor producing an overall general accuracy of 70% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.65, highlighting the classification difficulties encountered in using commercial satellite imagery for land cover assessments in an area with very heterogeneous fine grained land use patterns. [Termes IGN] Thuja plicataRésumé : (Auteur) Hyperion (a hyperspectral sensor) and the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) (a multispectral sensor) are carried on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) satellite. The Evaluation and Validation of EO-1 for substainable Development (EVEOSD) is our project supporting the EO-1 mission. With 10% of the world's forests and the second country by area in the world, Canada has a natural requirement for effective monitoring of its forests. Eight test sites have been selected for EVEOSD, with seven in Canada and one United States. Extensive fieldwork has been conducted at four of these sites. A comparison is made of forest classification from Hyperion, ALI, and the Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) of Landsat-7 for the Greater Victoria Watershed. The data have been radiometrically corrected and orthorectified. Feature selection and statistical transforms are used to reduce the Hyperion feature space from 198 channels to 11 features. Classes chosen for discrimination included Douglasfir, hemlock, western, redcedar, lodgepole pine, and red alder. Overall classification accuracies obtained for each sensor were Hyperion 90.0 %, ALI 84.8% and ETM+ 75.0%. Hyperspectral remote sensing provides significant advantages and greater accuracies over ETM+ for forest discrimination. The EO-1 sensors, Hyperion and ALI, provide data with excellent discrimination for Pacific Northwest in comparison to Landsat-7 ETM+. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Multiple satellite sensors are used to analyze physical processes that determine energy fluxes and their interaction at the urban surface. The study is based on summertime microclimate analyses of the Los Angeles and Paris metropolises. The method consists of deriving some parameters governing the surface heat fluxes, constructing statistics of thermal infrared images, and using a GIS to combine them with a landcover classification from SPOTHRV multispectral images, and with data from intensive insitu experiments. The average images reveal spatial and temporal variations of land surface temperature (LST), and distinct microclimatic patterns. The combined interpretation of the statistics images and of the landcover classification shows: (i) the effect of surface physical properties, especially in downtown business and industrial districts that display heatislands larger than 7°C; (ii) the temperating influence of water; (iii) the negative correlation between afternoon land surface temperature and normalized vegetation index, which confirms the cooling effect of urban parks; (iv) the correlation between variations of surface temperature and ozone concentration at diurnal and longer time scales. [Termes IGN] qualité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) The applicability of image calibration to likevalues in mapping water quality parameters from multitemporal images is explored. Six sets of water samples were collected at satellite overpasses over Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Australia. Analysis of these samples reveals that waters in this shallow bay are mostly TSS dominated, even though they are occasionally dominated by chlorophyll as well. Three of the images were calibrated to a reference image based on invariant targets. Predictive models constructed from the reference image were applied to estimating total suspended sediment (TSS) and Secchi depth from another image at a discrepancy of around 35 percent. Application of the predictive model for TSS concentration to another image acquired at a time of different water types resulted in a discrepancy of 152 percent. Therefore, image calibration to likevalues could be used to reliably map certain water quality parameters from multitemporal TM images so long as the water type under study remains unchanged. This method is limited in that the mapped results could be rather inaccurate if the water type under study has changed considerably. Thus, the approach needs to be refined in shallow water from multitemporal satellite imagery. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (auteur) (Auteur) An algorithm has been developed to map burnt areas over the Australian continent using SPOTVEGETATION (VGT) SI satellite images. The algorithm is composed of a set of thresholds applied to each pixel's value of the VGT spectral channels, two spectral indices and their temporal difference. The threshold values have been derived by means of a supervised classification methodology based on the classification and regression trees algorithm. A procedure has also been developed specifically for pre-processing the daily SI images for burnt area mapping purposes. The final product is composed of ten day and monthly burnt area maps over Australia for the full year 2000.
