[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Environmental agencies frequently require tools for quick assessments of areas affected by large fires. Remote sensing techniques have been reported as efficient tools to evaluate the effects of fire. However, there exist few quantitative comparisons about the performance of the diverse methods. This study quantitatively evaluated the accuracy of five different techniques, a field survey and four satellite-based techniques, in order to quickly classify a large forest fire that occurred in 1998 in Solsonès (north-east Spain) by means of an IRS LISS-3 image. Three pure classes were determined: burned area, unburned vegetation, and bare soil; along with a non-pure class that we called mixed area. These selected techniques were included into a tree classifier to investigate their partial contribution to the final classification. The most accurate methods when focusing on pure classes were those directly related to the spectral characteristics of the pixel: Reflectance Data and Spectral Unmixing (82% of overall accuracy), versus the poorer performances of Vegetation Indices (70%), Textural measures (72%) and the field survey (68.6%). Since no image processing technique was applied to the Raw Reflectance Data, it can be considered the most cost-effective method, and the tree classifier reinforces its importance. The results of this study reveal that time consuming and expensive methods are not necessarily the most accurate, especially when potentially easily distinguishable classes are involved. [Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this work is to show an automatic method of cloud classification for direct application in civil aviation. We start from the premise of an acceptable trade-off between calculation speed and accuracy in the output data. For this reason, visible and infrared channels of the Meteosat satellite were used alongside data provided by the A/TOVS (Advanced/Tiros-N Operational Vertical Sounder) probe onboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) polar satellites. A historical database of mean temperatures at ground level was also used. The analysis of different significant synoptic and mesoscale situations highlighted the efficacy of this method in the representation of the different cloud structures that normally appear in these situations. Considering the results of the study and given its speed and accuracy, it can be concluded that the method is appropriate for monitoring cloud systems in real time. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The revision of the 1995 land cover dataset for the Vale do Sousa region, in the northwest of Portugal, was carried out by supervised classification of a multispectral image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) sensor. The nine reflective bands of ASTER were used, covering the spectral range from 0.52-2.43 um. The image was initially ortho-rectified and segmented into 51 186 objects, with an average object size of 135 pixels (about 3 ha). A total of 582 of these objects were identified for training nine land cover classes. The image was classified using an algorithm based on a fuzzy classifier, Support Vector Machines (SVM), K Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) and a Logistic Discrimination (LD) classifier. The results from the classification were evaluated using a set of 277 validation sites, independently gathered. The overall accuracy was 44.6%, for the fuzzy classifier. 70.5%, for the SVM, 60.9% for the K-NN and 72.2% for the LD classifier. The difficulty in discriminating between some of the forest land cover classes was examined by separability analysis and unsupervised classification with hierarchical clustering. The forest classes were found to overlap in the multi-spectral space defined by the nine ASTER bands used. [Termes IGN] Sousson (rivière)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a land cover classification methodology in agricultural contexts that provides satisfactory results with a single satellite image per year acquired during the growing period. Our approach incorporates ancillary data such as cropping history (inter-annual crop rotations), context (altitude, soil type) and structure (parcels size and shape) to compensate for the lack of radiometric data resulting from the use of a single image. The originality of the proposed method resides in the three successive steps used: S1: per-pixel classification of a single SPOT XS image with a restricted number of land cover classes (RL) chosen to ensure good accuracy; S2: conversion of RLs into a per-parcel classification system using ancillary parcel boundaries: and S3: parcel allocation using exhaustive land cover classes (EL) and its refinement through the application of decision rules. The method was tested on a 120 km2 area (Sousson river basin, Gers, France) where exhaustive knowledge of land cover for two successive years allowed complete validation of our method. It allocated 87% of the parcels with a 75% accuracy rate according to the exhaustive list (EL). This is a satisfactory result obtained with one SPOT XS image in a small agricultural parcel context.
