[Termes IGN] teinteRésumé : (Auteur) A new pseudocolor mapping strategy for use with spectral imagery is presented. This strategy is based on a principal components analysis of spectral data, and it capitalizes on the similarities between three-color human vision and high-dimensional hyperspectral datasets. The mapping is closely related to three-dimensional versions of scatter plots that are commonly used in remote sensing to visualize the data cloud. The transformation results in final images where the color assigned to each pixel is solely determined by the position within the data cloud. Materials with similar spectral characteristics are presented in similar hues, and basic classification and clustering decisions can be made by the observer. Final images tend to have large regions of desaturated pixels that make the image more readily interpretable. The data cloud is shown here to be conical in nature, and materials with common spectral signatures radiate from the origin of the cone, which is not (in general) at the origin of the spectral data. A supervised method for locating the origin of the cone based on identification of clusters in the data is presented, and the effects of proper origin orientation are illustrated. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Urban area building extraction is one of the most challenging problems in photogrammetry. Wellextracted buildings are needed for a variety of applications, such as cartography, building GIS databases for cities, and urban planning. This paper presents a new technique to extract 3D building wireframes using a robust multiimage linematching algorithm. Although one pair of images is adequate to find the 3D position of two visibly corresponding image, features, it is not sufficient to solve the general building extraction problem due to obscured parts in the building. Four images are used in this research to extract the building wireframes. First the images are segmented into regions. Regions are then classified into roof regions and nonroof regions based on their size, shape, and intensity values. The roof region boundary pixels are located and used to find the region perimeters. Region correspondence is solved in a pairwise mode over all images using the epipolar constraint, region size, region shape, and region intensity values. Image lines within the corresponding regions are matched over all images simultaneously by first creating a plane for each region line. Planes are then intersected simultaneously and geometric consistency is used to determine acceptance or rejection. Results with high overlap and sidelap aerial images are presented and evaluated. The results show the completeness and accuracy that this method can provide for extracting complex urban buildings. The average coordinate accuracy is about 08 m using 1:4000 scale aerial photographs scanned at 30 um Six buildings were examined; the line detection rate is 98%. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) The accuracy of remote sensed forest stand maps is traditionnally assessed by comparing a sample of the map data with actual ground conditions. Samples most often comprise clusters of pixels within homogeneous areas , therby avoiding problems associated with accuratly maping "edges" (e.g., transition areas between two forest types). Consequentely, they may well overstimable accuracy, but the degree of overestimation is unknown. This paper examines two important factors regarding accuracy assessment that are not well studied : the effect on estimates of accuracy of (1) the sampling method and (2) the exact placement of the samples. Overall accuracy, normalized accuracy, and the KHAT statistic are computed from error matrices generated from simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, and systematic sampling using totally random sample placement and samples chosen from homogeneous areas only. The results indicate that Kappa appears to be appropriate to use with systematic sampling and stratified random sampling as it is with simple random sampling, but suggest that sample placement may have more of an effect on estimates of accuracy than sampling method alone.
