[Termes IGN] itérationRésumé : (Auteur) With the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery featuring as high as 1 meter resolution in the panchromatic mode and 3-meter resolution in the multispectral mode, there is an interest by many new commercial and public service applications such as cellular telephones coverage area design, urban/land cover planning, and real estate marketing to extract features from images automatically. To that end, the demand for unsupervised classification techniques is growing. In this paper, the Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Maximum A prior Probability (MAP) algorithms are used as decision rules to find boundaries of classes computed by the Iterative Self-Organizing Data (ISOADATA) algorithm. Different satellite images with different resolutions were used to experiment with these algorithms. The results of comparing and analyzing the algorithms revealed that MAP-ISODATA performed better than ML-ISODATA even when the same initial matrix was used. It was shown that there was no significant différence between ML-ISODATA and MAP-ISODATA in terms of accuracy. It was also realized that better results could be obtained if homogenous initialization strategies were used. [Termes IGN] lissage de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The present study explores the possibility of using Landsat imagery for mapping tropical forest types with relevance to forest ecosystem services. The central part in the classification process is the use of multi-date image data and pre-classification image smoothing. The study argues that multi-date imagery contains information on phenological and canopy structural properties and shows how the use of multi-date imagery has a significant impact on classification accuracy. Furthermore, the study shows the value of applying small kernel smoothing filters to reduce in-class spectral variability and enhance between-class spectral separability. Making use of these approaches and a maximum likehood algorithm, six tropical forest types were classified with an overall accuracy of 90.94%, and with individual forest classes mapped with accuracies above 75.19% (user's accuracy) and above 74.17% (producer accuracy). [Termes IGN] rizièreRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this study was to determine whether remotely sensed data could be used to identify rice-related malaria vector breeding habitats in an irrigated rice growing area near Niono, Mali. Early stages of rice growth show peak larval production, but Landsat sensor data are often obstructed by clouds during the early part of the cropping cycle (rainy season). In this study, we examined whether a classification based on two Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM)+ scenes acquired in the middle of the season and at harvesting times could be used to map different land uses and rice planted at different times (cohorts), and to infer which rice growth stages were present earlier in the season. We performed a maximum likelihood supervised classification and evaluated the robustness of the classifications with the transformed divergence separability index, the kappa coefficient and confusion matrices. Rice was distinguished from other land uses with 98% accuracy and rice cohorts were discriminated with 84% accuracy (three classes) or 94% (two classes). Our study showed that optical remote sensing can reliably identify potential malaria mosquito breeding habitats from space. In the future, these 'crop landscape maps' could be used to investigate the relationship between cultivation practices and malaria transmission. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data is introduced. The approach classifies not single pixels but groups of pixels that represent already existing objects in a GIS database. The approach is based on a supervised maximum likelihood classification. The multispectral bands grouped by objects and very different measures that can be derived from multispectral bands represent the n-dimensional feature space for the classification. The training areas are derived automatically from the geographical information system (GIS) database. After an introduction into the general approach, different input channels for the classification are defined and discussed. The results of a test on two test areas are presented. Afterwards, further measures, which can improve the result of the classification and enable the distinction between more land-use classes than with the introduced approach, are presented.
