[Termes IGN] Tamil Nadu (Inde ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) This article reveals an application of multi-spectral satellite data for analysing the dynamics of different coastal landform features along the southern coastal Tamil Nadu of India. An integrated approach comprising visual image interpretation and maximum-likelihood supervised classification has been employed to classify the coastal landforms by using IRS data (during the period 1999–2006). The quality of image classification has been assessed by performing the accuracy assessments with the existing thematic maps and finally the coastal landforms have been mapped. The study reveals that the dynamics of coastal landforms such as sandy beaches, mud-flats, sand dunes and salt marshes along the study area are mostly influenced by the coastal processes, sediment transport, geomorphology and anthropogenic activities. Major anthropogenic sources for the perturbation of beach sediment budgets and a cause of beach erosion along the study area are excessive sand mining, removal of sand dunes, coastal urbanization, tourism and developmental activities. [Termes IGN] extraction de coucheRésumé : (Auteur) For traditional supervised classification methods, all land-cover types need to be exhaustively labeled to train the classifier. However, there are situations where the training sample classes are incomplete due to a lack of understanding of ground cover types in the image. In this study we propose a one-by-one (OBO) classification framework to address this incomplete training sample problem. The OBO approach is based on a one-class classifier (positive and unlabeled learning algorithm), and it extracts the land-cover type from the image one at a time. The performance of the proposed method was compared with a traditional supervised classifier using a high spatial resolution image. The average accuracy of the new method is 76.34 percent across different training sample sizes, whereas the accuracy of the classical approach is 66.46 percent, with an increase of 9.88 percent. The results demonstrate that the proposed new framework provides significantly higher classification accuracy than the classical approach at the 95 percent confidence level, and shows promise in dealing with the incomplete training sample problem for supervised image classification. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (éditeur) Monitoring of water and land objects enters a revolutionary age with the rise of ubiquitous remote sensing and public access. Earth monitoring satellites permit detailed, descriptive, quantitative, holistic, standardized, global evaluation of the state of the Earth skin in a manner that our actual Earthen civilization has never been able to before. The water monitoring topics covered in this book include the remote sensing of open water bodies, wetlands and small lakes, snow depth and underwater seagrass, along with a variety of remote sensing techniques, platforms, and sensors. The Earth monitoring topics include geomorphology, land cover in arid climate, and disaster assessment after a tsunami. Finally, advanced topics of remote sensing covers atmosphere analysis with GNSS signals, earthquake visual monitoring, and fundamental analyses of laser reflectometry in the atmosphere medium. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Neural networks are attractive intelligence techniques increasingly being used to classify remote sensor imagery. However, their performance is contingent upon a wide range of algorithm and non-algorithm factors. Despite significant progresses being made over the past two decades, there is no consistent guidance that has been established to automate the use of neural networks in remote sensing. The purpose of this study was to assess several internal parameters affecting image classification accuracy by multi-layer-perceptron (mlp) neural networks. The MLP networks have been considered as the most popular neural network architecture. We carefully configured and trained a set of neural network models with different internal parameter settings. Then, we used these models to classify an Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image into several major land cover categories, and the accuracy of each classified map was assessed. The results reveal that number of hidden layers, activation function, and training rate can substantially affect the classification accuracy and that a neural network with appropriate internal parameters can lead to a significant classification accuracy improvement for urban land covers when comparing to the outcome by the Gaussian Maximum Likelihood (GML) classifier. These findings can help design efficient neural network models for improved performance.
