[Termes IGN] précipitationRésumé : (auteur) Ground-clutter is a significant cause of missed-detection and underestimation of precipitation in complex terrain from space-based radars such as the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). This research proposes an Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework consisting of a precipitation detection model (PDM) and a precipitation regime classification model (PCM) to improve orographic precipitation retrievals from GPM-DPR using machine learning. The PDM is a Random Forest Classifier using GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) calibrated brightness temperatures (Tbs) and low-level precipitation mixing ratios from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) analysis as inputs. The PCM is a Convolutional Neural Network that predicts the precipitation regime class, defined independently based on quantitative features of ground-based radar reflectivity profiles, using GPM DPR Ku-band (Ku-PR) reflectivity profiles and GMI Tbs. The AI framework is demonstrated for warm-season precipitation in the Southern Appalachian Mountains over. Note de contenu :

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Aims : Assigning vegetation plots to vegetation units is a key step in biodiversity management projects. Nevertheless, the process of plot assignment to types is usually non‐standardized, and assignment consistency remains poorly explored. To date, the efficiency of automatic classification programs has been assessed by comparing them with a unique expert judgment. Therefore, we investigated the consistency of five phytosociology expert judgments, and the consistency of these judgements with those of automatic classification programs.
Location : Mainland France.
Methods : We used 273 vegetation plots distributed across France and covering the diversity of the temperate and mountainous forest ecosystems of Western Europe. We asked a representative panel of five French organizations with recognized expertise in phytosociology to assign each plot to vegetation units. We provided a phytosociological classification including 228 associations, 43 alliances and eight classes. The assignments were compared among experts using an agreement ratio. We then compared the assignments suggested by three automatic classification programs with the expert judgments.
Results : We observed small differences among the agreement ratios of the expert organizations; a given expert organization agreed with another one on association assignment one time in four on average, and one time in two on alliance assignment. The agreement ratios of the automatic classification programs were globally lower, but close to expert judgments.
Conclusions : The results support the current trend toward unifying the existing classifications and specifying the assignment rules by creating guiding tools, which will decrease inter‐observer variation. As compared to a pool of phytosociology experts, programs perform similarly to individual experts in vegetation unit assignment, especially at the alliance level. Although programs still need to be improved, these results pave the way for the creation of habitat time series crucial for the monitoring and conservation of biodiversity.

[Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (auteur) Change detection (CD) is a crucial topic in many remote sensing applications. In the recent years, satellite polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) systems (e.g., the Sentinel-1 constellation) became a suitable tool for multitemporal monitoring due to the regular acquisitions with a short revisit time in different polarimetric channels. Methods for CD in PolSAR data mainly focus on binary CD (i.e., they provide information about the presence/absence of change only), whereas the polarimetric enhanced information provides multiple features that can be exploited for performing multiclass CD. In this article, we introduce a novel framework for the characterization of multitemporal changes in dual-polarimetric data. The framework is based on the definition of polarimetric change vectors (PCVs) and their representation in a polar coordinate system. PCVs allow characterizing and, thus, to separate multiclass changes in terms of target properties of the single-time scenes and the scattering theory. The proposed model is used to: 1) derive the statistical behaviors of change and no change classes in PolSAR multitemporal images; 2) design an automatic and unsupervised strategy to estimate the optimal number of changes; and 3) distinguish no change from change classes and the kinds of change from each other. An experimental analysis has been conducted on three multitemporal PolSAR data sets having different complexities in terms of number and kinds of change classes. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the better performance with respect to both specific techniques for CD in dual-pol SAR data and a general multiclass CD method, not designed for PolSAR data. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Satellite image time series, bolstered by their growing availability, are at the forefront of an extensive effort towards automated Earth monitoring by international institutions. In particular, large-scale control of agricultural parcels is an issue of major political and economic importance. In this regard, hybrid convolutional-recurrent neural architectures have shown promising results for the automated classification of satellite image time series. We propose an alternative approach in which the convolutional layers are advantageously replaced with encoders operating on unordered sets of pixels to exploit the typically coarse resolution of publicly available satellite images. We also propose to extract temporal features using a bespoke neural architecture based on self-attention instead of recurrent networks. We demonstrate experimentally that our method not only outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches in terms of precision, but also significantly decreases processing time and memory requirements. Lastly, we release a large openaccess annotated dataset as a benchmark for future work on satellite image time series.
