[Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) Choropleth maps visualize areal geographical data by grouping data into a few map classes and assigning different colors, shades, or patterns. Recent studies show that data uncertainty, commonly observed in real-life applications, should also be accounted for when determining the best classification scheme. Due to data uncertainty, a few studies note that map units might be placed in a wrong class, and the concept of map robustness has been introduced to minimize such misplacement. Recently, an algorithm has been developed to integrate robustness into the design of the optimal map classification scheme. However, the existing algorithm has two limitations: first, it is only suitable for certain robustness metrics. Second, when identifying the optimal class breaks, the existing algorithm requires predefined candidate class break values, which might lead to sub-optimal solutions. This paper resolves these issues by proposing a new model, namely, the Continuous Robust Map Classification Problem (CRMCP), and the associated solution approach. The CRMCP allows mapmakers to customize robustness metrics according to their data and applications. In addition, a particle swarm optimization algorithm is developed to solve the CRMCP. The model and algorithm are tested using American Community Survey data. Test results suggest that the new approach can find better solutions than the existing algorithm. The study improves the usability of choropleth maps when uncertain geographical attributes are involved and allows spatial analysts and decision-makers to incorporate robustness into the mapmaking process more flexibly. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) Understanding and modelling the properties of the stochastic variations in geodetic time series is crucial to obtain realistic uncertainties for deterministic parameters, e.g., long-term velocities, and helpful in characterizing non-modelled processes. With the increasing span of geodetic time series, it is expected that additional observations would help better understand the low-frequency properties of these stochastic variations. In the meantime, recent studies evidenced that the choice of the functional model for the time series biases the assessment of these low-frequency stochastic properties. In particular, frequent offsets in position time series can hinder the evaluation of the noise level at low frequencies and prevent the detection of possible random-walk-type variability. This study investigates the ability of the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method to correctly retrieve low-frequency stochastic properties of geodetic time series in the presence of frequent offsets. We show that part of the influence of offsets reported by previous studies results from the MLE method estimation biases. These biases occur even when all offset epochs are correctly identified and accounted for in the trajectory model. They can cause a dramatic underestimation of deterministic parameter uncertainties. We show that one can avoid biases using the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (RMLE) method. Yet, even when using the RMLE method or equivalent, adding offsets to the trajectory model inevitably blurs the estimated low-frequency properties of geodetic time series by increasing low-frequency stochastic parameter uncertainties more than other stochastic parameters. Each year, thousands of fish, sea birds, sea turtles, and other marine species are killed by ingesting or becoming entangled with plastic debris. Reducing marine plastic pollution is particularly challenging for developing countries owing to the wide dispersal of plastic waste disposal and scarce public cleanup resources. To costeffectively reduce marine pollution, resources should target “hotspot” areas, where large volumes of plastic litter have a high likelihood of ending up in the ocean. Using new public information, this study develops a hotspot targeting strategy for Accra and Lagos, which are major sources of marine plastic pollution in West Africa. The same global information sources can support hotspot analyses for many other coastal cities that generate marine plastic waste. The methodology combines georeferenced household survey data on plastic use, measures of seasonal variation in marine plastic pollution from satellite imagery, and a model of plastic waste transport to the ocean that uses information on topography, seasonal rainfall, drainage to rivers, and river transport to the ocean. For cleanup, the results for West Africa assign the highest locational priority to areas with heavy plastic-waste disposal along river channels or in steeply sloped locations with high rainfall runoff potential near rivers. They assign the highest temporal priority to just before the onset of the first-semester rainy season, when runoff from the first rains transports large volumes of plastic waste that have accumulated during the dry season. Existing anti-spoofing algorithms concentrate on the detection of these attacks; however, they are unable to prevent the counterfeit signal, which causes false position and timing results. Some defense techniques require the assistance of other sensors or measurement devices located at different positions. These impose many restrictions on the practical applications of anti-spoofing algorithms. In this study, the multicorrelator estimator, designed initially to prevent multipath signals, is applied to detect and mitigate spoofing. A statistic is proposed for spoofing detection based on the code phase difference between counterfeit and authentic signals. This statistic can significantly reduce the rate of false and missed alarms. Assuming there is no spoofing at the beginning, the pseudorange difference between epochs is derived for spoofing validation, allowing spoofing suppression in a single receiver. Based on this study, an estimation-validation-mitigation structure is presented. A robust extended Kalman filter is proposed to reduce gross errors in the multicorrelator measurements and improve estimation accuracy. Public-spoofing datasets recorded in real environments were used to verify the performance of different parameters. A total of 81 complex correlators were introduced in the experiments. Results show that using the proposed scheme, the position or time offsets caused by spoofing drop from 600 m to approximately 20 m, and the spoofing is mitigated considerably. The proposed method provides an effective anti-spoofing structure that requires only a single antenna and does not require additional sensors. Contrary to monocultures, quantifying species mixing influence on tree growth suppose a challenge since the presence of two or more species requires to estimate the degree of intra- and inter-specific competition among trees. Moreover, it is well known that aridity can also influence tree growth, especially in the Mediterranean Basin. In the present context of climate change, it is essential to take into account species mixing and aridity uncertainty in the design of sustainable management guidelines for Mediterranean mixed forests. To achieve that, data from Spanish National Forest Inventory was used in this study to fit new mixed-effects basal area increment (BAI) models for 29 two-species compositions in Spain.
