[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Color palettes are widely used by artists to define colors of artworks and explore color designs. In general, artists select the colors of a palette by following a set of rules, e.g. contrast or relative luminance. Existing interactive palette exploration tools explore palette spaces following limited constraints defined as geometric configurations in color space e.g. harmony rules on the color wheel. Palette search algorithms sample palettes from color relations learned from an input dataset, however they cannot provide interactive user edits and palette refinement. We introduce in this work a new versatile formulation enabling the creation of constraint-based interactive palette exploration systems. Our technical contribution is a graph-based palette representation, from which we define palette exploration as a minimization problem that can be solved efficiently and provide real-time feedback. Based on our formulation, we introduce two interactive palette exploration strategies: constrained palette exploration, and for the first time, constrained palette interpolation. We demonstrate the performances of our approach on various application cases and evaluate how it helps users finding trade-offs between concurrent constraints. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Adaptive map interfaces have the potential of increasing usability by providing more task dependent and personalized support. It is unclear, however, how map adaptation must be designed to avoid a loss of control, transparency, and predictability. This article investigates the user experience of adaptive map interfaces in the context of gaze-based activity recognition. In a Wizard of Oz experiment we study two adaptive map interfaces differing in the degree of controllability and compare them to a non-adaptive map interface. Adaptive interfaces were found to cause higher user experience and lower perceived cognitive workload than the non-adaptive interface. Among the adaptive interfaces, users clearly preferred the condition with higher controllability. Results from structured interviews reveal that participants dislike being interrupted in their spatial cognitive processes by a sudden adaptation of the map content. Our results suggest that adaptive map interfaces should provide their users with control at what time an adaptation will be performed. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Periodicity is embedded in all societies. As most of us organize our lives based on temporal structures, it is hard to imagine what life would be like without it. We experience periodicity through naturally occurring rhythms that exist in nature, such as sunrise/sunset, seasonal changes in the weather, and the tides. We also experience it through abstract means via cultural, political, religious ties, such as the weekend, Independence Day, and Ramadan. Forms of periodicity, like the examples above, are foundational to making sense of human activity because they provide contextual rationale and frame normaility. However, disparate calendars (e.g. Islamic vs. Gregorian), localized idiosyncrasies, and other variables greatly complicate the analytical ability to uncover and understand human activity at a given time within a specified region. We have developed PerSE (Periodicity in Spatiotemporal Events): a web application designed to aid users in the detection and analysis of calendar related periodicity in spatiotemporal event data sets via exploratory user interaction. PerSE is composed of several crossfiltering views: the Map, Attribute View, Time-Wheel, Timeline, and Table. Users interactively set and release filters on one or more of the views to detect and analyze calendar related periodicity. This paper illustrates the utility of PerSE through an in-depth description of the tool and proof of concept usage example. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Some map users still experience difficulties when attempting to route plan, navigate and/or wayfind. This paper provides information on the outcomes of a research project that aims to identify the nature of the difficulties/challenges these users experience. The paper draws on findings from studies of strategies used by novice and experienced map users, and users with poor spatial abilities, to identify the skills that those with poor spatial abilities or with little map reading experience lack. Data were collected using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 hardware and associated software. Fourteen participants walked between two predetermined locations while wearing eye-tracking glasses and speaking their thoughts aloud. The data collected in this study were analysed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Analysis of the results shows three key findings for this particular group: looking at the map incessantly led to missed environmental cues; street names were not labelled at decision-making points on the map; and some individuals having poor spatial abilities prefer small-scale landmarks, for example, buildings with numbers to locate themselves, as opposed to using road names or larger landmarks. We argue that by considering these findings, map designs could be adjusted to meet the needs of map users with poor spatial abilities.
