First is the focus on map skills which enables, secondly, younger children to begin to read maps for place information to appreciate what is shown on a paper or digital map. This article extends these purposes by recognising other aspects of children’s map learning which usually remain implicit or are rarely countenanced. One concerns primary children’s out-of-school mapping in their daily lives, the ways they make sense of the places they engage with through their personal geographies. Rather than an adjunct in map teaching, younger children’s mental mapping can be engaged and enhanced through conscious use and reflection throughout primary schooling. Two further important contexts involve children using local large-scale maps and atlas maps. Children encounter imaginary maps in stories and games providing a role for such maps in fostering children’s map learning. These map learning contexts and maps have emotional connections for children. This is that mapping at local and national scales fosters their senses of local belonging and national identity. Drawing on these contexts, 12 purposes are identified for primary map learning. While there has been a considerable amount of research on the syntactic structure of addressing systems in order to evaluate and improve their quality, aspects of semantics and pragmatics have been less explored. An address is primarily associated by humans to the elements of their spatial mental representations, but may also influence their spatial knowledge and activities through the level of detail it provides. Therefore, it is not only important how addressing components are structured, but it is also of interest to study their meaning as well as the pragmatics in relation to an interpreting agent. This article studies three forms of addresses (i.e., structured as in Austria, semi-formal as in Japan, and descriptive as in Iran) under the principles of semiotics (i.e., through levels of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics). Syntax is discussed through formal definitions of the addressing systems, while semantics and pragmatics are assessed through an agent-based model to explore how they influence spatial knowledge acquisition and growth. The question of how to style map legends is a topic which has often been addressed by cartographic academics and practitioners. Nevertheless, the question of where to position a map legend has only hardly been discussed. Principles of cognitive sciences allow the assumption that a legend positioned to the right of a map field can be read and decoded faster than a legend on the left side. This study investigates the impact of legend positioning on legend decoding. It involves an experiment based on a recognition memory paradigm and the registration of eye-movements. The results show that, in less time, a legend positioned to the right of the map field (compared to a left legend) can be decoded faster. The same accuracy of a cognitive representation of geographic space can be achieved in spatial memory. [Termes descripteurs IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) We report on a study in which we examine if the visual design of virtual environments (VEs) affects visuospatial knowledge acquisition in younger and older adults with varying cognitive abilities in the context of navigational learning, specifically when a perspective switch is involved. Perspective switch between first-person and aerial-views is an important and commonly executed task in navigation; and it is a special case in studying the effects of aging on navigational performance as well, because, reportedly, it is particularly harder for older people. In a controlled experiment, our participants learned a route in first-person view VE, and reproduced what they learned in an aerial-perspective view in immediate and delayed recall stages. To examine the effects of (and interactions between) multiple factors involved in the experiment in relation to the given task, we provide an in-depth investigation of group differences in spatial knowledge acquisition when a perspective switch is required based on age, mental rotation abilities, and visuospatial memory capacity with three VE designs that differ in levels of realism. Our findings based on the recall accuracy of 81 (42 younger, 39 older) participants in sketching tasks demonstrate significant differences across VE types, overall, in favor of our custom-designed VE in this demanding task. Furthermore, we demonstrate that age and visuospatial memory abilities are strong moderating factors, explicitly in this sketching task that requires a perspective switch, irrespective of VE types. However, the current landmark extraction methods mainly focus on the visual salience of landmarks and are insufficient for obtaining high extraction accuracy when the size of the geographical dataset varies. This study introduces a random forests (RF) classifier combining with the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) in urban landmark extraction. Both GIS and social sensing data are employed to quantify the structural and cognitive salience of the examined urban features, which are available from basic spatial databases or mainstream web service application programming interfaces (APIs). The results show that the SMOTE-RF model performs well in urban landmark extraction, with the values of recall, precision, F-measure and AUC reaching 0.851, 0.831, 0.841 and 0.841, respectively. Additionally, this method is suitable for both large and small geographical datasets. The ranking of variable importance given by this model further indicates that certain cognitive measures – such as feature class, Weibo popularity and Bing popularity – can serve as crucial factors for determining a landmark. The optimal variable combination for landmark extraction is also acquired, which might provide support for eliminating the variable selection requirement in other landmark extraction methods.
