Rethinking Maps brings together leading researchers to explore how maps are being rethought, made and used, and what these changes mean for working cartographers, applied mapping research, and cartographic scholarship. It offers a contemporary assessment of the diverse forms that mapping now takes and, drawing upon a number of theoretic perspectives and disciplines, provides an insightful commentary on new ontological and epistemological thinking with respect to cartography.
This book presents a diverse set of approaches to a wide range of map forms and activities in what is presently a rapidly changing field. It employs a multi-disciplinary approach to important contemporary mapping practices, with chapters written by leading theorists who have an international reputation for innovative thinking. Much of the new research around mapping is emerging as critical dialogue between practice and theory and this book has chapters focused on intersections with play, race and cinema. Other chapters discuss cartographic representation, sustainable mapping and visual geographies. It also considers how alternative models of map creation and use such as open-source mappings and map mash-up are being creatively explored by programmers, artists and activists. There is also an examination of the work of various ‘everyday mappers’ in diverse social and cultural contexts.
This blend of conceptual chapters and theoretically directed case studies provides an excellent resource suited to a broad spectrum of researchers, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in human geography, GIScience and cartography, visual anthropology, media studies, graphic design and computer graphics. Rethinking Maps is a necessary and significant text for all those studying or having an interest in cartography.Note de contenu : Preface

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The modeling of a landscape environment is a cognitive activity that requires appropriate spatial representations. The research presented in this paper introduces a structural and semantic categorization of a landscape view based on panoramic photographs that act as a substitute of a given natural environment. Verbal descriptions of a landscape scene provide the modeling input of our approach. This structure-based model identifies the spatial, relational, and semantic constructs that emerge from these descriptions. Concepts in the environment are qualified according to a semantic classification, their proximity and direction to the observer, and the spatial relations that qualify them. The resulting model is represented in a way that constitutes a modeling support for the study of environmental scenes, and a contribution for further research oriented to the mapping of a verbal description onto a geographical information system-based representation. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Map-making has traditionally been the domain of professional cartographers, but with the advent of interactive display systems, users now have the flexibility to create and configure their own digital maps and other visual displays. This flexibility can be beneficial only if users have good intuitions about which display configurations are effective or ineffective for different tasks. Here we examine people's intuitions about display effectiveness and whether these intuitions match the actual effectiveness of different displays. Surveys of undergraduate students and post-graduate meteorology students reveal that they consistently prefer enhanced displays, especially those that add animation and realism. These naïve intuitions contrast with the principles of cartography, which emphasize the importance of abstracting from the real world to create simple displays that make task-relevant information salient. Both a review of objective studies and a new study presented here support traditional principles of cartography and are inconsistent with naïve intuitions. We interpret these studies in relation to new theoretical notions of users' folk fallacies about how perception works, and derive implications for the design of interactive display systems and education. [Termes IGN] représentation mentale spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) A key strength of a map for navigation is that it can show the features of an environment and their spatial relationships over an area too large to be perceived through direct experience. This characteristic is important for navigation, including planning travel, making decisions while en route, and developing a user's cognitive map. But what happens on a small display, such as that of a cell phone, when, instead of seeing the entire area of interest, the user can view only a discrete section of the map at any time? This article presents research investigating the implications of a small display for map use and spatial knowledge acquisition. A research study was conducted with 80 participants using a map to answer distance and direction questions in one of four viewable-extent conditions, ranging from 10°/o to 100% of the map viewable at a time. Map-use results showed that small viewable extents hindered performance with respect to accuracy and response time but had no effect on participants' confidence in their performance on the navigation tasks. Tests of spatial knowledge acquisition showed differences across conditions for recall tasks, but a sketch-map analysis revealed no differences based on viewable extent.
