[Termes IGN] paramètres d'orientation de la TerreRésumé : (auteur) The ITRF2005 is the first rigorous combination ensuring ITRF and EOP consistency, based on time series of station positions and Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs). The objective of the presentation is the development of a combination strategy allowing to ensure the ITRF2005 and IERS 05 C04 consistency with time. Combining additional input time series after the release of ITRF2005 from the four techniques (VLBI, SLR, GPS and DORIS) allows the assessment of two main procedures: (1) using CATREF combination model and (2) using EOP-only combination method. The main features of the two combination strategies are presented together with numerical application. Comparisons of results obtained by the two procedures will be discussed in an attempt to evaluate the current accuracy of EOP determination by space geodesy techniques and to guide our conclusion for future development. [Termes IGN] sciences humaines et socialesRésumé : (Auteur) Monitoring and controlling the environment requires its natural and built components to be integrated within an inclusive model. Integration of multi-sourced spatial data plays an important role here. However, fragmentation among the institutions involved results in inconsistency in data co-ordination and makes integration costly and time-consuming. The remedy is to address all the issues, institutional, legal, social and policy, within a holistic framework. The authors argue that a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) can provide this. [Termes IGN] simplification de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Schematic networks are linear abstractions of functional networks, such as route networks. Lines in the original network are modified in order to produce a schematic network which satisfies a set of constraints chosen to design the network. A method is described which accomplishes this line transformation using an iterative improvement technique driven by design constraints. The method maintains topological characteristics of the network by the use of simple geometric operations and tests. The iterative process can be repeated until the line displacements become small enough or until it meets user denned stopping criteria. Experimental results are provided to examine the acceptability of outcomes and the convergence of the applied iterative technique. Criteria for measuring the quality of results, as well as for stopping the iterative approach are presented. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) This study aims at assessing the consistency between different precipitable water vapour (PWV) datasets over Africa (between 35°N and 10°S). This region is characterized by large spatial and temporal variability of humidity but also by the scarcity of its operational observing network, limiting our knowledge of the hydrological cycle. We intercompare data from observing techniques such as ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS), radiosondes, AERONET sun photometers and SSM/I, as well as reanalyses from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA-40) and National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP2). The GPS data, especially, are a new source of PWV observation in this region. PWV estimates from nine ground-based GPS receivers of the international GPS network data are used as a reference dataset to which the others are compared. Good agreement is found between observational techniques, though dry biases of 12–14% are evidenced in radiosonde data at three sites. Reasonable agreement is found between the observational datasets and ERA-40 (NCEP2) reanalyses with maximum bias ⩽9% (14%) and standard deviation ⩽17% (20%). Since GPS data were not assimilated in the ERA-40 and NCEP2 reanalyses, they allow for a fully independent validation of the reanalyses. They highlight limitations in the reanalyses, especially at time-scales from sub-daily to periods of a few days. This work also demonstrates the high potential of GPS PWV estimates over Africa for the analysis of the hydrological cycle, at time-scales ranging between sub-diurnal to seasonal. Such observations can help studying atmospheric processes targeted by the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis project.
