[Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the potential of multitemporal/polarization C-band SAR data for land-cover classification. Multitemporal Radarsat-1 data with HH polarization and ENVISAT ASAR data with VV polarization acquired in the Yedang plain, Korea are used for the classification of typical five land-cover classes in an agricultural area. The presented methodologies consist of two analytical stages: one for feature extraction and the other for classification based on the combination of features. Both a traditional SAR signal property analysis-based approach and principal-component analysis (PCA) are applied in the feature extraction stage. Special concerns are in the interpretation of each principal component by using principal-component loading. The tau model applied as a decision-level fusion methodology can provide a formal framework in which the posteriori probabilities derived from different sensor data can be combined. From the case study results, the combination of PCA-based features showed improved classification accuracy for both Radarsat-1 and ENVISAT ASAR data, as compared with the traditional SAR signal property analysis-based approach. The integration of PCA-based features based on multiple polarization (i.e. HH from Radarsat-1, and both VV and VH from ENVISAT ASAR) and different incidence angles contributed to a significant improvement of discrimination capability for dry fields which could not be properly classified by using only Radarsat-1 or ENVISAT ASAR data, and thus showed the best classification accuracy. The results of this case study indicate that the use of multiple polarization SAR data with a proper feature extraction stage would improve classification accuracy in multitemporal SAR data classification, although further consideration should be given to the polarization and incidence angle dependency of complex land-cover classes through more experiments. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : Auteur) Growing demand for efficient land use above and below the ground motivates the transition of cadastre and land-management systems from traditional two-dimensional systems to three-dimensional ones. This transition is required especially in sprawling urban areas that are turning into megacities. A major concern in realizing the 3D cadastre vision is the development of efficient methods for attaching the third dimension to the existing 2D systems. In this regard, airborne laser technology that offers direct acquisition of dense and accurate 3D data appears to be the optimal means for this objective. Integration of surface data into objects and shapes, however, requires handling discrepancies between both datasets, which in turn can lead to incorrect assignment of height information. We present herein a methodology for fusing airborne laser-scanning-derived data into existing 2D cadastral systems. We demonstrate this integration in urban environments comprising high-rise buildings and open areas. Analysis of the data sources shows the necessity for such transformation, while the results demonstrate the appropriateness of the proposed fusion concept. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The integration of Hyperion and Ikonos imagery are used to differentiate the subtle spectral differences of landuse/ land-cover types on household farms in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA) with an emphasis on secondary and successional forests. Approaches are examined that include the use of Principal Components Analysis to compress the Hyperion hyperspectral data to its most vital spectral channels; linear mixture modeling to derive subpixel fractions of land-use/land-cover types through the generation of spectral endmembers; and supervised and unsupervised classifications to map forest regrowth, agricultural crops and pasture, and other land-uses on 18 survey farms that are spatially coincident with the imagery. A longitudinal socio-economic and demographic survey (1990 and 1999) is used to characterize household farms; a community survey (2000) is used to assess nearby market towns and service centers; GIS is used to represent the resource endowments of farms and their geographic accessibility. Statistical relationships are examined using Spearman rank correlation coefficients to assess the linkages among a number of selected social, geographical, and biophysical variables and secondary and successional forest on household farms. Relationships suggest the importance of household characteristics, farm resources, and geographic access of secondary forests on surveyed household farms that were previously deforested and converted to agriculture through extensification processes. Results support the integrated use of hyperspectral and hyperspatial data for characterizing forest regrowth on household farms, and the use of multi-dimensional social survey data and GIS to assess plausible causes and consequences of land-use/land-cover dynamics in the NEA. [Termes IGN] SahelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method to monitor the dynamics of herbaceous vegetation in the Sahel. The approach is based on the assimilation of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data acquired by the VEGETATION instrument on board SPOT 4/5 into a simple sahelian vegetation dynamics model. The study region is located in the Gourma region of Mali. The vegetation dynamics model is coupled with a radiative transfer model (the SAIL model). First, it is checked that the coupled models allow for a realistic simulation of the seasonal and interannual variability of NDVI over three sampling sites from 1999 to 2004. The data assimilation scheme relies on a parameter identification technique based on an Evolution Strategies algorithm. The simulated above-ground herbage mass resulting from NDVI assimilation is then compared to ground measurements performed over 13 study sites during the period 1999–2004. The assimilation scheme performs well with 404 kg DM/ha of average error (n = 126 points) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.80 (to be compared to the 463 kg DM/ha and r = 0.60 of the model performance without data assimilation). Finally, the sensitivity of the herbage mass model estimates to the quality of the meteorological forcing (rainfall and net radiation) is analyzed thanks to a stochastic approach.
