[Termes IGN] statistique mathématiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a methodology to map classes of degraded forest in the Eastern Amazon. Forest degradation field data, available in the literature, and 1-m resolution IKONOS image were linked with fraction images (vegetation, nonphotosynthetic vegetation (NPV), soil and shade) derived from spectral mixture models applied to a Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 4 multispectral image. The forest degradation map was produced in two steps. First, we investigated the relationship between ground (i.e., field and IKONOS data) and satellite scales by analyzing statistics and performing visual analyses of the field classes in terms of fraction values. This procedure allowed us to define four classes of forest at the SPOT 4 image scale, which included: intact forest; logged forest (recent and older logged forests in the field); degraded forest (heavily burned, heavily logged and burned forests in the field) ; and regeneration (old heavily logged and old heavily burned forest in the field). Next, we used a decision tree classifier (DTQ to define a set of rules to separate the forest classes using the fraction images. We classified 35% of the forest area (2097.3 km2 ) as intact forest. Logged forest accounted for 56% of the forest area and 9% of the forest area was classified as degraded forest. The resultant forest degradation map showed good agreement (86% overall accuracy) with areas of degraded forest visually interpreted from two IKONOS images. In addition, high correlation (R2 = 0.97) was observed between the total live aboveground biomass of degraded forest classes (defined at the field scale) and the NPV fraction image. The NPV fraction also improved our ability to mapping of old selectively logged forests. [Termes IGN] image Landsat-TMRésumé : (Auteur) Deforestation and colonization in Amazonia have attracted substantial attention. This article focuses on an area of 3,000 km within the Brazilian State of Rondonia. Two adjacent settlements were compared to assess the role of their different designs in landscape change. Anari was planned following an orthogonal road network. Machadinho was designed with attention to topography in laying out roads and farm properties, while including communal reserves. Field research was undertaken in conjunction with multi-temporal classifications of remotely sensed data (1988, 1994, and 1998) and landscape ecology methods. The results indicate that large patches of communal reserves play an important role in maintaining lower levels of fragmentation. Analyses of landscape structure confirmed that forest patches in Machadinho are less fragmented, more complex, and preserve more interior habitat. By comparing the effects of different settlement designs on landscape change and forest fragmentation, this article contributes to the debate about colonization strategies in Amazonia. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Landsat TM and ETM data were used to create forest/non-forest maps with spatial patterns of forest fragmentation created by road building, agricultural colonisation and hydrocarbon exploration in Chapare (Bolivia) since the 1980s were analysed. Different spatial patterns of forest fragmentation were identified and analysed using landscape ecology metrics. These patterns are function of their deforestation histories which, in turn, can be explained by variety of Bolivian government policies. The relationships between landscape metrics and different simulated spatial resolutions of image data (from 30 to 1100) biodiversity conservation in humid tropical lowlands are considered. [Termes IGN] modèle de simulationRésumé : (Auteur) New generalized statistical methods to measure agreement between two maps at multiple-resolutions, where each cell in each map has a multinomial distribution among any number of categories, are presented. This methodology quantifies agreement between any two categorical maps, where either map uses fuzzy or crisp classification. The method measures the agreement at various resolutions by aggregating neighboring cells into an increasingly coarse grid. At each resolution, the method partitions the overall agreement into correct due to chance, correct due to quantity, correct due to location, error due to location, and error due to quantity. In addition, the method computes six statistics that are useful to interpret the differences between maps, and shows how these statistics change with resolution. This technique is particularly useful for characterizing land-cover change and for validating landcover change models. For illustration, this paper applies these theoretical concepts to the validation of a land-use change model for Costa Rica.
