[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Forest mapping from satellite sensor imagery provides important information for the timely monitoring of forest growth and deforestation, bioenergy potential assessment, and modeling of carbon flux, among others. Due to the daily global revisit rate and wide swath width, MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images are used commonly for satellite-derived forest mapping at both regional and global scales. However, the spatial resolution of MODIS images is too coarse to observe fine spatial variation in forest cover. The last few decades have seen the production of several fine-spatial-resolution satellite-derived global forest cover maps, such as Hansen's global tree canopy cover map of 2000, which includes abundant spectral, temporal, and spatial prior information about forest cover at a fine spatial resolution. In this paper, a novel learning-based spatial-temporal superresolution mapping approach is proposed to integrate both current MODIS images and prior maps of Hansen's tree canopy cover, to map present forest cover with a fine spatial resolution. The novel approach is composed of three main stages: 1) automatic generation of 240-m forest proportion images from both 240- and 480-m MODIS images using a nonlinear learning-based spectral unmixing method; 2) downscaling the 240-m forest proportion images to 30 m to predict the class possibilities at the subpixel scale using a temporal-example learning-based downscaling method; and 3) final production of the fine-spatial-resolution forest map by solving a regularization-based optimization problem. The novel approach produced more accurate fine-spatial-resolution forest cover maps in terms of both visual and quantitative evaluation than traditional pixel-based classification and the latest subpixel based superresolution mapping methods. The results show the great efficiency and potential of the novel approach for producing fine-spatial-resolution forest maps from MODIS images. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Growing availability of long-term satellite imagery enables change modeling with advanced spatio-temporal statistical methods. Multidimensional arrays naturally match the structure of spatio-temporal satellite data and can provide a clean modeling process for complex spatio-temporal analysis over large datasets. Our study case illustrates the detection of breakpoints in MODIS imagery time series for land cover change in the Brazilian Amazon using the BFAST (Breaks For Additive Season and Trend) change detection framework. BFAST includes an Empirical Fluctuation Process (EFP) to alarm the change and a change point time locating process. We extend the EFP to account for the spatial autocorrelation between spatial neighbors and assess the effects of spatial correlation when applying BFAST on satellite image time series. In addition, we evaluate how sensitive EFP is to the assumption that its time series residuals are temporally uncorrelated, by modeling it as an autoregressive process. We use arrays as a unified data structure for the modeling process, R to execute the analysis, and an array database management system to scale computation. Our results point to BFAST as a robust approach against mild temporal and spatial correlation, to the use of arrays to ease the modeling process of spatio-temporal change, and towards communicable and scalable analysis. [Termes IGN] SoudanRésumé : (Auteur) This study describes the development of a semi-automatic object-based image analysis approach for the detection and quantification of deforestation in Zalingei, Darfur, in consequence of the increasing concentration of refugees or internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region. The classification workflow is based on a multi-scale approach, ranging from the analysis of high resolution SPOT-4 to very high resolution IKONOS and QuickBird satellite imagery between 2003 and 2008. The overall accuracy rates for the classification of the SPOT 4 data ranged from 92% up to 95%, while those for the QuickBird and IKONOS classification have shown values of 88 and 87%, respectively. The resulting trends in woody vegetation cover were compared with the development of the local population and the variability of precipitation. The results show that the strong increase in human population in the Zalingei IDP camps can be associated with considerable decrease in woody vegetation in the camp vicinity. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (éditeur) The growing of crops for bioenergy has been subject to much recent criticism, as taking away land which could be used for food production or biodiversity conservation. This book challenges some commonly-held ideas about biofuels, bioenergy and energy cropping, particularly that energy crops pose an inherent threat to ecosystems, which must be mitigated. The book recognises that certain energy crops (e.g. oil palm for biodiesel) have generated sustainability concerns, but also asks the question "is there a better way?" of using energy crops to strategically enhance ecosystem functions. It draws on numerous case studies, including where energy crops have had negative outcomes as well as well as cases where energy crops have produced benefits for ecosystem health, such as soil and water protection from the cropping of willow and poplar in Europe and the use of mallee eucalypts to fight salinity in Western Australia. While exploring this central argument, the volume also provides a systematic overview of the socio-economic sustainability issues surrounding bioenergy. Note de contenu : Introduction
