[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite-based mapping can provide a timely and efficient means of identifying burned vegetation at continental scales for estimating greenhouse gas emissions and impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget. In this study, we used a sample of 55 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes distributed across Canada to validate and calibrate 1998 and 1999 national-level burned areas maps produced using coarse resolution (approx. 1-km) SPOT VEGETATION and NOAA AVHRR imagery. Commission and omissions errors, based on fire events greater than 200 ha, were found to be small in the coarse resolution maps (4 percent and 1 percent, respectively). However, the coarse resolution burned-area estimates were 72 percent larger than the crown fire burned area mapped at 30 m using Landsat TM (11,039 versus 6,403 ha average area). This bias was attributed to spatial aggregation effects in which the coarse resolution product included the tree crown fire, partial burn, and unburned fractions of a pixel. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) In a fast changing era, present and future oriented hazard management strategies should be internally capable to cope with larger aims of technological, social and economic dimensions. Within this context, technological, economic, legal and social management responses, in order to face the challenges of a dynamic environment, should incorporate both "non-structural" and "structural" mechanisms as components of an integrated policy that links environment to growth. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) OMIS1 (Operative Modular Imaging Spectrometer) is a new imaging spectrometer designed by Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, and has eight thermal infrared bands (nos. 105112). This paper presents the use of images obtained from these thermal infrared bands to detect and map coal fires in northwestern China. According to experiments in the Rujigou area of Ningxia municipality, each thermal infrared band has high correlation (>0.939). Regression analysis of land surface temperature (LST) with the pixel value in each thermal infrared band indicates: (1) for images acquired at daytime (from 11:00 to 13:00 local time), the first four thermal infrared bands have a linear relationship, and the final four bands have an exponential relationship; (2) for images acquired in the early morning (from 06:00 to 07:30), each band has a linear relationship. In conclusion, the ground temperature map is based on the 107th band of morning time. The mapping error is greatly determined by the quantity and precision of ground data measured synchronously. [Termes IGN] TRMMRésumé : (Auteur) Eight different fire datasets for Indonesia were compared with each other and to fine spatial resolution burnscar maps. Results show that each dataset detects different fires. More than two-thirds of the fires detected by one dataset are not detected by any other dataset. None of the datasets detect fires in all test areas. Fire regime, satellite sensor characteristics and fire detection algorithms all influence which fires are detected. Fire datasets were not complementing each other as they all had commission as well as omission errors.
