[Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) A discrete scattering model, based on the radiative-transfer theory, is used to simulate the backscattering of burned pine canopies at C-band. The model is first parameterized either with direct field measurements on a selected burned area in Greece or with proper estimations of the required variables, for which direct measurements were not possible. The simulated backscatter at VV polarization was compared against European Remote Sensing 2 (ERS-2) observations. The comparison was based on the observed backscattering of nine burned plots, during four different postfire acquisitions (n=36). In general, the model provides satisfying estimations of the backscattering with a root-mean-square error of 1.01 dB. The copolar signal for both HH and VV showed a mild decrease with increasing fire impacts and was considerably affected by the incidence angle. From the experiments performed in the simulated environment, it is concluded that the SAR copolar (C-band) backscatter varies with respect to certain fire impact levels. Other important acquisition- or stand-dependent variables (such as incidence angle and snag age) were also found to impact the relationship between backscatter and fire impacts. Finally, the backscattering variability on increasing volumetric soil moisture (VSM) and snag moisture was examined. The increase of VSM from 20% to 30% amplified the signal in both copolarized bands by 1.2-1.5 dB. This amplification was more apparent on VV polarization than in HH polarization. Instead, the HH signal proved to be more sensitive on the increase of snag moisture, which was tested under a stable dry soil. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (auteur) Fuel type mapping of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in support of fire spread simulation modelling should include both natural and urban features. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of (1) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) structural data, (2) ortho-image data and (3) a combination of both as input to an object-based classification approach for mapping fuels within two WUI areas in San Diego, California. A separability analysis was utilized to determine the surface topographical and spectral layers most influential for discriminating WUI fuels. An accuracy assessment revealed that the combination of LiDAR and ortho-image data inputs substantially increased classification accuracy by 20–30% and achieved overall accuracies > 80%. Results from the study provide knowledge on how reliable fuel types within the WUI can be mapped using high-resolution LiDAR and ortho-image data while presenting new insights into fuel type mapping. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The estimation of live fuel moisture content (LFMC) is necessary for fire danger assessment. Several studies have successfully used satellite imagery to estimate LFMC, both using empirical and simulation approaches (Yebra et al., 2013). The latter are based on Radiative Transfer Models (BTM). They are generally more robust and easier to generalize, but they rely heavily on the proper parameterization. Since some of the input parameters are associated with different physiological processes, a better understanding of how those parameters co-vary is necessary for constraining the simulation scenarios, thus avoiding combinations of parameters that are unlikely to occur (for instance, in temperate ecosystems, it is unlikely to find simultaneously high values of leaf chlorophyll and low values of leaf moisture). To improve parameterization of RTM models for LFMC estimation, we conducted a laboratory experiment to measure trends in leaf and canopy variables of two tree species broadly distributed in Eurosiberian climates: Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur L.). Measurements of LFMC, equivalent water thickness (EWT), dry matter content (DMC), chlorophyll (ClHh), leaf area index (LAl), leaf angle distribution (LIDF), crown height to width ratio (CHW) and plant reflectance were performed. Significant positive correlations were found between LFMC and EWT (Rs >0.5), and negative ones were found between both parameters and CMb (Rs Numéro de notice : A2014-242 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.14358/PERS.80.5.451 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.14358/PERS.80.5.451 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33145

[Termes IGN] incendie de forêtRésumé : (Auteur) Post-wildfire management practices can greatly influence vegetation condition and dynamics, and are crucial in Mediterranean erosion-prone poor soil sites. Acquiring accurate ground inventory data is time-consuming, expensive and limited to small areas; but lidar data can be used to assess the impact of fires, and also to determine the convenient silvicultural measurements which should be carried out for site restoration. The aim of this paper was to assess the post-fire regeneration status of the vegetation in Sant Llorenç del Munt massif after a wildfire in summer 2003 by modeling the relationship between lidar height bins and canopy height model (CHM) with field data. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) prediction models provided estimations of vegetation fraction cover, average height (HM) over 1.30 m and number of stems over 1.30 m, with Pearson r values between 0.18 and 0.83. Classification models built with the same variables allowed separating two ground-based regeneration classes (good and scarce regeneration) with an approximate accuracy of 83 to 76 percent (model building and validation data, respectively). [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) is a modular decision support system that monitors forest fires at a continental scale. It delivers real-time, multi-dimensional data on forest fires to civil protection and fire fighting services in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle-East. Since its inception in 2001, EFFIS has evolved into the central reference point for pan-European forest and wildfire information, and this paper describes and current applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art fire information systems that provide data to civil protection authorities across Europe. The objective of EFFIS is to provide accurate data in order to assess and mitigate the impacts of wildfire events on society and the environment. Furthermore, EFFIS provides real-time information on critical fires, supporting decision making for international collaboration on forest fire fighting activities. Its goal is to make these data readily available using Web-based standards and protocols.
