[Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) Different natural factors make the Mediterranean ecosystem specially vulnerable to forest wildfires: the weather, with extremely long dry summers; the strong winds, which dry the soil and vegetation and spread the fire once it has begun; the abrupt topography and finally, the human factor. In late spring, May 30 to June 4 in 1995, a wildfire broke burning an area of 1800 ha called "EI Madrofialejo" (Sevilla). This area is characterized for his rough topography, with deep narrow valleys. One month and half later, an area of 1500 ha of forest was burnt in Sierra Benneja, (Malaga). The development of temperature and vegetation index maps from the daily NOAAAVHRR sensor databases, and the synoptical meteorological maps analysis, enable the study of increase in temperature and the NDVI decrease of the previous days and during the fire, as well as the climatic conditions of those dates. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) The use of Remote Sensing allows for the estimation and the cartography of areas affected by forest fires. For the inclusion of a cell in the burnt category, visual inspection techniques or soil data have been used to obtaining therefore a dependent value of the area and the study date. In this endeavour two techniques are applied on three Landsat-TM images that allow for the designation of threshold change in a statistically objective manner not dependent on neither the location nor the time of occurrence of the fire. These techniques, previously developed by the Department on NOAA-AVHRR images consist of the application of the differences method and the regression method on previous and subsequent NDVI values in the course of the fire. Secondly, the level of damage caused by the fires was estimated. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In Portugal, fires are a major problem, consuming, in average, 100 000 ha/year. A large percentage of these fires - 43% (DGF estimations) - are due to arson, which most of the times is related to land use change purposes. As an attempting to reduce the amount of intentional fires, the Portuguese legislation includes a set of laws that regulate the landuse change in areas devastated by forest fires. However, the control of these areas on the field is very expensive and time consuming, resulting in an ineffective procedure. In this study, we propose a more efficient and cost effective procedure to control the compliance of the legislation on burnt forest areas. This procedure is based on a system, BAMS (Burned Areas Monitoring System), built on a GIS that uses multi-temporal dataset of satellite images for detecting burned areas, and for characterizing land use before and after fire occurrence. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Each year, millions of tons of forests and savannah all over the world are destroyed. Animal and plant species disappear as a result of deforestation and fires caused by nature and human activity. This drastic reduction in forests has had an adverse impact on the delicate global ecosystem. Using NOAA AHVRR imagery, manipulated by ERDAS Imagine software, a study has been completed to identify, assess and differennate between forests that remain intact and forests that are on fire, or damaged areas in the Central African Republic. Vector and raster data were overlaid to provide a simple, but effective, Geographical Information System. [Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) The conversion of Digital Counts (DC) to surface temperature, for Thermal Infrared wavelenghts in TIROS-NOAA satellites, requires three steps: 1) calibration; 2) conversion of radiance to true temperature; 3) soil temperature after atmospheric and emissivity correction. The transformation of DC to radiance of the scene depends on the blackbody internal temperature and the representative cold space view sensed with the platinum resistance thermomethers. Header words 18, 19 and 20 each contain those measures and header words 23 to 52 provide ten internal target data each for Infra Red channels 3, 4 and 5. The conversion to brightness temperature from radiance is performed using the inverse of Planck's radiation equation. The non-linearity in the calibration is accounted for through the addition of a correction term to the brightness temperature of scene. From true brightness temperature, the split-window algorithm, determines the surface temperature. This methodology is applied to a group of images dated before, during and after a fire in Aznalcollar (Spain) for a temporal evolution analysis.
