[Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Maps are often used for persuasive purposes. Yet little is known about whether or not different persuasive map producers use similar cartographic techniques or about how such techniques have evolved through time. This article explores the genealogy of persuasive map design by analyzing 256 such maps published since 1800. Quantitative content analysis is used to break down each map among 190 contextual, data, design, and layout variables. Cross-tabulations and descriptive statistics are used to test whether and how the characteristics of persuasive maps have changed over time and differ by type of producer. The results illustrate that although some persuasive techniques have changed over time and by producer, most techniques are recurring and used by all types of producers. The results imply that different techniques of persuasive cartography are largely timeless, regardless of producer or medium. It is also argued that content analysis may prove a useful method for other research in map genealogy. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Emerging mobile mapping applications create new constraints for cartographers. These constraints should be considered in addition to the traditional cartographic rules used to design maps. Legend colors could be optimized regarding those constraints. A challenge for optimization concerns the preservation of map semiotic quality. In our research, we propose a quantification of the cartographic quality of a map, regarding a given reference map that considers semantic rules of association, differentiation and order conveyed by map colors. Some mobile devices require less energy to display dark colors than lighter ones. In this paper we consider the energy consumption as the contextual constraint to optimize. Map samples are designed, while taking into account some conventional uses of colors for relevant themes: hydrography, vegetation and the background layer. We discuss how to find the best compromise between a contextual constraint (the energy required to display a map on a screen of a mobile device in our example) and the cartographic consistency on colors regarding the initial semantic relationships in the legend. We answer the question of how much can cartographic rules be altered while still preserving semiotic quality. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) To what extent can similarity and difference in the cartographic style of state topographic maps be explained within the context of the cartographic language paradigm? This paper explores the suitability of this approach as a hermeneutic for stylistic diversity, the persistence of nationally-specific conventions and problems of symbol standardisation. After reviewing earlier treatments of map language as analogy and metaphor in cartographic theory, we consider the construction of cartographic meaning and its role within a semiological system and suggest how variations in denotation and connotation allow a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of state topographic map symbologies. In treating topographic cartography as a natural visual language for communicating place, a new paradigm is proposed through which problems of international collaboration concerning the portrayal of transnational landscapes (especially at larger map scales) may be approached and potentially overcome.
