[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Color quality evaluation is key to judging map quality, which can improve data visualization and communication. However, most existing methods for evaluating map colors are tedious and subjective manual methods. In this paper, we study sequential color schemes, a widely used map color type and propose a learning-based approach for evaluating the color quality. The approach consists of two steps. First, we extract and characterize the cartographic factors for determining the quality of sequential color schemes, such as color order, color match, color harmony, color discrimination and color uniformity. Second, we present a model to predict the color quality based on AdaBoost, a type of ensemble learning algorithm with excellent classification performance and use these factors as input data. We conduct a case study based on 781 samples and train the AdaBoost-based model to predict the quality of sequential color schemes. To evaluate the model’s performance, we calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The AUC values are 0.983 and 0.977 on the training data and testing data, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed approach can be used to automatically evaluate the quality of sequential color schemes for maps, which helps mapmakers select good colors. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) The See Color is a color coding system based on Braille writing to communicate colors to people with visual impairments. This study assessed the perception of the theme Temperature by blind people, by using the See Color code on two isarithmic tactile maps and the perception of subjects with normal color vision. An average temperature map of Australia had 10 classes, but these intervals were regrouped into four classes on Corel Draw software. The new map was duplicated in the digital project in A4 size, both included the See Color code in two color schemes obtained from the Color Brewer website. Subsequently, they were laser-printed on swell paper to produce the tactile relief. The chromatic perception was observed, as well as the thermal sensations that the colors could represent for blind participants (06), normally sighted participants in basic education (23), and normally sighted participants in higher education (20). In this research, the See Color code showed the potential to provide spatial knowledge as a graphic language through colors in color maps for adventitiously blind and for normally sighted participants based on their perception of colors and tactile color codes. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses the suitability of different cartographic design variants for visually communicating recommended routes. We performed a user study, investigating the potential of six different design variants (color hue, distortion, length distortion, size, spacing, and symbols) for influencing route choice using cartographic visualization methods while recommending a longer, but less congested route. The visualizations for all design variants have been prepared in three different levels of intensity of modification (weak, medium, and strong). Although the input data (traffic density) is the same for all representation methods, variations are each visualized using different cartographic design principles. Our results showed that in general, for the majority of routing scenarios, the participants’ route choice has been significantly influenced toward choosing the recommended route – indicating that the modification of route visualizations does actually lead to a different route choice behavior. Results further revealed that for most variants, willingness to choose the recommended route increases with higher intensity of modification. While some of the design variants like symbols or length distortion have been found effective for recommending routes at all levels of intensity, others like size and spacing have not been found suitable. A comparison between route choices and estimated route characteristics suggested a close relationship between willingness to choose the recommended route and the characteristics participants associate with the representation. In particular, route visualizations that create an impression of faster, more convenient, or more fluent travel experience are more likely to influence route choice behavior. [Termes IGN] pictogrammeRésumé : (auteur) In this work, realistically drawn objects are identified on digital maps by convolutional neural networks. For the first two experiments, 6200 images were retrieved from Pinterest. While alternating image input options, two binary classifiers based on Xception and InceptionResNetV2 were trained to separate maps and pictorial maps. Results showed that the accuracy is 95–97% to distinguish maps from other images, whereas maps with pictorial objects are correctly classified at rates of 87–92%. For a third experiment, bounding boxes of 3200 sailing ships were annotated in historic maps from different digital libraries. Faster R-CNN and RetinaNet were compared to determine the box coordinates, while adjusting anchor scales and examining configurations for small objects. A resulting average precision of 32% was obtained for Faster R-CNN and of 36% for RetinaNet. Research outcomes are relevant for trawling map images on the Internet and for enhancing the advanced search of digital map catalogues.
