In the last years, coupled with the spread of semi-automated survey and processing approaches based on photogrammetry, orthophotos have become almost a standard for monitoring the underwater environment. If on land the definition of the reference coordinate system and projection plane for the orthophoto generation is trivial, underwater it may represent a challenge. In this paper, we address the issue of defining the vertical direction and resulting horizontal plane (levelling) for the differential ortho rectification. We propose a non-invasive, contactless method based on roll and pitch angular data provided by in-camera IMU sensors and embedded in the Exif metadata of JPEG and raw image files. We show how our approach can be seamlessly integrated into automatic SfM/MVS pipelines, provide the mathematical background, and showcase real-world applications results in an underwater monitoring project. The results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and, for the first time, provide a metric evaluation of the definition of the vertical direction with low-cost sensors enclosed in digital cameras directly underwater. However, as the number of camera poses and features grows, refinement through bundle adjustment becomes inefficient. Inspired by global motion averaging methods, we propose a new bundle adjustment objective which does not rely on image features' reprojection errors yet maintains precision on par with classical BA. Our method averages over relative motions while implicitly incorporating the contribution of the structure in the adjustment. To that end, we weight the objective function by local hessian matrices-a by-product of local bundle adjustments performed on relative motions (eg, pairs or triplets) during the pose initialisation step. Such hessians are extremely rich as they encapsulate both the features' random errors and the geometric configuration between the cameras. These pieces of information propagated to the global frame help to guide the final optimisation in a more rigorous way. We argue that this approach is an upgraded version of the motion averaging approach and demonstrate its effectiveness on both photogrammetric datasets and computer vision benchmarks. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (auteur) The Corona KH-4 reconnaissance satellite missions from 1962-1972 acquired panoramic stereo imagery with high spatial resolution of 1.8-7.5 m. The potential of 800,000+ declassified Corona images has not been leveraged due to the complexities arising from handling of panoramic imaging geometry, film distortions and limited availability of the metadata required for georeferencing of the Corona imagery. This paper presents Corona Stereo Pipeline (CoSP): A pipeline for processing of Corona KH-4 stereo panoramic imagery. CoSP utlizes a deep learning based feature matcher SuperGlue to automatically match features point between Corona KH-4 images and recent satellite imagery to generate Ground Control Points (GCPs). To model the imaging geometry and the scanning motion of the panoramic KH-4 cameras, a rigorous camera model consisting of modified collinearity equations with time dependent exterior orientation parameters is employed. The results show that using the entire frame of the Corona image, bundle adjustment using well-distributed GCPs results in an average standard deviation (SD) of less than 2 pixels. We evaluate fiducial marks on the Corona films and show that pre-processing the Corona images to compensate for film bending improves the accuracy. We further assess a polynomial epipolar resampling method for rectification of Corona stereo images. The distortion pattern of image residuals of GCPs and y-parallax in epipolar resampled images suggest that film distortions due to long term storage as likely cause of systematic deviations. Compared to the SRTM DEM, the Corona DEM computed using CoSP achieved a Normalized Median Absolute Deviation (NMAD) of elevation differences of ? 4m over an area of approx. 4000km2. We show that the proposed pipeline can be applied to sequence of complex scenes involving high relief and glacierized terrain and that the resulting DEMs can be used to compute long term glacier elevation changes over large areas. [Termes IGN] séquence d'imagesRésumé : (auteur) In the context of image orientation, it is commonly assumed that the environment is completely static. This is why dynamic elements are typically filtered out using robust estimation procedures. Especially in urban areas, however, many such dynamic elements are present in the environment, which leads to a noticeable amount of errors that have to be detected via robust adjustment. This problem is even more evident in the case of cooperative image orientation using dynamic objects as ground control points (GCPs), because such dynamic objects carry the relevant information. One way to deal with this challenge is to detect these dynamic objects prior to the adjustment and to process the related image points separately. To do so, a novel methodology to distinguish dynamic and static image points in stereoscopic image sequences is introduced in this paper, using a neural network for the detection of potentially dynamic objects and additional checks via forward intersection. To investigate the effects of the consideration of dynamic points in the adjustment, an image sequence of an inner-city traffic scenario is used; image orientation, as well as the 3D coordinates of tie points, are calculated via a robust bundle adjustment. It is shown that compared to a solution without considering dynamic points, errors in the tie points are significantly reduced, while the median of the precision of all 3D coordinates of the tie points is improved. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) During the last two decades, UAV emerged as standard platform for photogrammetric data collection. Main motivation in that early phase was the cost effective airborne image collection at areas of limited size. This was already feasible by rather simple payloads like an off-the-shelf, compact camera and a navigation-grade GNSS sensor. Meanwhile, dedicated sensor systems enable applications that have not been feasible in the past. One example is the airborne collection of dense 3D point clouds at millimetre accuracies, which will be discussed in our paper. For this purpose, we collect both LiDAR and image data from a joint UAV platform and apply a so-called hybrid georeferencing. This process integrates photogrammetric bundle block adjustment with direct georeferencing of LiDAR point clouds. By these means georeferencing accuracy is improved for the LiDAR point cloud by an order of magnitude. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in the context of a project, which aims on monitoring of subsidence of about 10 mm/year. The respective area of interest is defined by a ship lock and its vicinity of mixed use. In that area, multiple UAV flights were captured and evaluated for a period of three years. As our main contribution, we demonstrate that 3D point accuracies at sub-centimetre level can be achieved. This is realized by joint orientation of laser scans and images in a hybrid adjustment framework, which enables accuracies corresponding to the GSD of the captured imagery.
