[Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) To improve the accuracy of sensor orientation using calibrated aerial images, this paper proposes an automatic sensor orientation method utilizing horizontal and vertical constraints on human-engineered structures, addressing the limitations faced with sub-optimal number of Ground Control Points (GCPs) within a scene. Related state-of-the-art methods rely on structured building edges, and necessitate manual identification of end points. Our method makes use of line-segments but eliminates the need for these matched end points, thus eliminating the need for inefficient manual intervention.
To achieve this, a 3D line in object space is represented by the intersection of two planes going through two camera centers. The normal vector of each plane can be written as a function of a pair of azimuth and elevations angles. The normal vector of the 3D line can be expressed by the cross product of these two plane’s normal vectors. Then, we create observation functions of horizontal and vertical line constraints based on the zero-vector cross-product and the dot-product of the normal vector of the 3D lines. The observation functions of the horizontal and vertical lines are then introduced into a hybrid Bundle Adjustment (BA) method as constraints, including observed image points as well as observed line segment projections. Finally, to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, simulated and real data are tested. The results demonstrate that, in cases with only 3 GCPs, the accuracy of the proposed method utilizing line features extracted automatically, is increased by 50%, compared to a BA using only point constraints.

[Termes IGN] modèle stochastiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The best unbiased estimates of unknown parameters in linear models have the smallest expected mean-squared errors as long as the residuals are weighted with their true variance–covariance matrix. As this condition is rarely met in real applications, the least-squares (LS) estimator is less trustworthy and the parameter precision is often overoptimistic, particularly when correlations are neglected. A careful description of the physical and mathematical relationships between the observations is, thus, necessary to reach a realistic solution and unbiased test statistics. Global Navigation Satellite Systems and terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) measurements show similarities and can be both processed in LS adjustments, either for positioning or deformation analysis. Thus, a parallel between stochastic models for Global Navigation Satellite Systems observations proposed previously in the case of correlations and functions for TLS range measurements based on intensity values can be drawn. This comparison paves the way for a simplified way to account for correlations for a use in LS adjustment. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we present a new fast and robust method for structure from motion (SfM) for data sets potentially comprising thousands of ordered or unordered images. Our work focuses on the two most time-consuming procedures: (a) image matching and (b) pose estimation. For image matching, a new method employing a random k-d forest is proposed to quickly obtain pairs of overlapping images from an unordered set. After that, image matching and the estimation of relative orientation parameters are performed only for pairs found to be very likely to overlap. For pose estimation, we use a two-stage global approach, separating the determination of rotation matrices and translation parameters; the latter are computed simultaneously using a new method. In order to cope with outliers in the relative orientations, which global approaches are particularly sensitive to, we present a new constraint based on triplet loop closure errors of rotation and translation. Finally, a robust bundle adjustment is carried out to refine the image orientation parameters. We demonstrate the potential and limitations of our pipeline using various real-world datasets including ordered image data acquired from UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and other platforms as well as unordered data from the internet. The experiments show that our work performs better than comparable state-of-the-art SfM systems in terms of run time, while we achieve a similar accuracy and robustness. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) precise point positioning (PPP) on a fixed‐wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is demonstrated for photogrammetric mapping at accuracies of centimetres in planimetry and about a decimetre in height, from flights of 25 to 30 minutes in duration. The GPS PPP estimated camera station positions are used to constrain estimates of image positions in the photogrammetric bundle block adjustment, as with relative GPS positioning. GPS PPP alleviates all spatial operating constraints associated with the installation and the use of ground control points, a local ground GPS reference station or the need to operate within the bounds of a permanent GPS reference station network. This simplifies operational logistics and enables large‐scale photogrammetric mapping from UAVs in even the most remote and challenging geographic locations. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) With the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS), the accurate camera positions at exposure can be known and the GNSS-assisted bundle block adjustment (BBA) approach is possible for integrated sensor orientation (ISO). This study employed ISO approach for camera pose determination with the objective of investigating the impact of a good sensor pre-calibration on a poor acquisition geometry. Within the presented works, several flights were conducted on a dike by a small UAV embedded with a metric camera and a GNSS receiver. The multi-lever-arm estimation within the BBA procedure makes it possible to merge image blocks of different configurations such as nadir and oblique images without physical constraints on camera and GNSS antenna positions. The merged image block achieves a better accuracy and the sensor self-calibrated well. The issued sensor calibration is then applied to a less preferable acquisition configuration and the accuracy is significantly improved. For a corridor acquisition scene of about 600 m , a centimetric accuracy is reached with one GCP. With the provided sensor pre-calibration, an accuracy of 3.9 cm is achieved without any GCP.
