[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) A digital elevation model (DEM) extracted from Ikonos in-track stereo images using a 3D physical model developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada was evaluated. First, the stereo photogrammetric bundle adjustment was set up with about ten accurate ground control points. The DEM was then generated using an area-based multiscale image matching method and 3D semiautomatic editing tools and then compared to lidar elevation data with a 0.2-m accuracy. Because the DEM is, in fact, a digital terrain surface model where the height of land cover (trees, houses) is included, the accuracy varies depending on land cover types. Using 3D visual classification of the stereo Ikonos images, different classes (forests, residential, bare soil, lakes) were generated to take into account the height of the surface (natural and human-made) in the accuracy evaluation. An elevation linear error with 68 percent confidence level (LE68) of 1.5 m was obtained for bare surfaces while an LE68 of 6.4 m was achieved over the full area. Five-meter contour lines could thus be derived, compliant with the highest topographic standard. Better results could thus be expected when using stereo-images acquired in the summertime. On the other hand, an LE68 of 2.5 m to 6.6 m was obtained depending on the land-cover type and its surface height. For residential areas, the surface height did not affect the errors very much (2.5-m LE68) when compared to bare surface results because one- and two-story houses were sparse in the test area. Because the images were unfortunately acquired in wintertime and the lidar data in summertime, elevation errors (LE68 and bias) also depended on the type of forest (deciduous, coniferous, mixed, sparse). An evaluation based on terrain slope and azimuth showed that the DEM error was linearly correlated with slope and that elevations on sun-facing slopes were 1-m more accurate than elevations on slopes facing away from the sun. Bundle adjustment is the problem of refining a set of parameters (internal calibration, external calibration, 3D model). The refinement is performed by the minimization of a cost function. In usual photogrammetric applications, this cost function is based on image tie points and 3D control points. The cost function measures the distance between the observed data and the model. Linear features are especially important when dealing with architectural or terrestrial images, since they do not require segment extremity to match. So, they are easier to detect automatically within particular scenes (buildings, landscapes...). First, we present the basic concepts of bundle adjustment and the integration of linear features. Using the same concept, the linear feature model is based on the distance between the 3D line re projection in the image and the detected image segments. We describe an algorithm for the resolution of this non-linear least-square problem under constraints. Second, we study the influence of these features on two cases. The first case is a calibration polygon, with a large overlap between images. The second one is a façade of a building. We compare a statistical evaluation of the reliability of the estimated parameters to the theoretical bounds calculated with the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hessian matrix associated to our problem. We stress that segments can be relevant features and can highly increase precision. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) Thirteen panchromatic (Pan) and multiband (XS) Ikonos Geoproduct images over seven study sites with various environments and terrain were tested using different cartographic data and accuracies with a 3D parametric model developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada. The objectives of this study were to define the relationship between the final accuracy and the number and accuracy of input data, to track error propagation during the full geometric correction process (bundle adjustment and orthorectification), and to advise on the applicability of the model in operational environments.
When ground control points (GCPs) have an accuracy poorer than 3 m, 20 GGPs over the entire image are a good compromise to obtain a 3- to 4-m accuracy in the bundle adjustment. When GCP accuracy is better than 1 m, ten GCPs are enough to decrease the bundle adjustment error of either panchromatic or multiband images to 2 to 3 m. Because GGP residuals reflect the input data errors (map and/or plotting), these errors did not propagate through the 3D parametric model, and the internal accuracy of the geometric model is thus better (around a pixel or less).
Quantitative and qualitative evaluations of orthoimages were thus performed with either independent check points or overlaid digital vector files. Generally, the measured errors confirmed the predicted errors or were even slightly better, and a 2- to 4-m positioning accuracy was achieved for the orthoimages depending upon the elevation accuracy (DEM and grid spacing). To achieve a better final positioning accuracy, such as 1 m, a DEM with an accuracy of 1 to 2 m and with a fine grid spacing is required, in addition to welldefined GCPs with an accuracy of 1 m.Numéro de notice : A2003-001 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.14358/PERS.69.1.43 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.14358/PERS.69.1.43 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=22299

[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a purely geometrical approach for matching and chaining edgels, i.e. contours points with their tangent direction, to reconstruct in a general way 3D rectilinear or curved surface boundaries from multiple calibrated images. Results show that the 3D reconstructed edgels are highly reliable and accurate, and correctly reproduce the 3D limits of very small image structures thus demonstrating the high resolving power of this technique and enabling a finer description and understanding of urban scenes. 3D Edgels are a key feature for reconstructing man-made objects. Practical examples of edgels reconstruction are given on various type ot 3D objects (roundabouts, zebra crossings, cars, classical and odd shape buildings, dormer Windows) in surveys at a ground pixel size of 25 cm. Practical examples of edgels integration within a surface reconstruction or 3D pattern recognition and object extraction processes are also provided. Indeed 3D edgels can be used as characteristic and constraining lines for the surface topography reconstruction and used to build the limits of cartographic objects thus ensuring a natural geometrical and topological coherence between Digital Surface Models and Digital Object Models.
