[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) : The automation of the map design process through map generalisation continues to be a challenging area of research. It is acknowledged that a diverse range of techniques are applied during the process of map generalisation and these have been mirrored by the creation of a range of algorithms that mimic these discrete operations (such as typification, aggregation, selection). This paper discusses in detail one such algorithm that resolves conflict among objects through displacement. Perhaps more critical than the algorithm itself, is the stage prior to the application of displacement (identification, modelling), and the phase after application (the evaluation). It is argued that these two stages are absolutely critical to the successful design of automated systems. The paper begins with a review of other approaches to displacement and then describes a methodology that encompasses detection, resolution through displacement, and evaluation. This methodology has been implemented in Stratège, an object oriented expert system devoted to contextual generalisation. Details of the implementation are given, and results are illustrated using 'real' geographical data. The results are evaluated and the applicability of the entire methodology is discussed in the broader context of other map generalisation algorithms, based on the explicit representation of constraints. [Termes IGN] lissage de courbeRésumé : (Auteur) The line simplification problem is an old and well studied problem in cartography. Although there are several algorithms to compute a simplification there seem to be no algorithms that perform line simplification in the context of other geographical objects. This paper presents a nearly quadratic time algorithm for the following line simplification problem: Given a polygonal line, a set of extra points, and a real E> 0, compute a simplification that guarantees (i) a maximum error E; (ii) that the extra points remain on the same side of the simplified chain as of the original chain; and (iii) that the simplified chain has no self intersections. The algorithm is applied as the main subroutine for subdivision simplification and guarantees that the resulting subdivision is topologically correct. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationIndex. décimale : 37.70 Généralisation Résumé : (Auteur) Automation is increasingly important in producing and maintaining cartographic data sets. This thesis deals with automatic methods to propagate updates between cartographic data sets. The major idea is to update only the most detailed data set (master data set) and then propagate these updates automatically to less detailed data sets (target data sets). The approach used is firstly to formulate linguistic rules for the update process. The information sources for these linguistic rules are data set specifications, cartographic data sets, paper maps and practising cartographers. These linguistic rules are translated into logical rules and then implemented in a prototype system. The prototype system is built on top of an object-oriented map production software. The system requires a multiple representation database, which consists of cartographic data sets at different scales together with connectivities between those objects that refer to the same physical entities. The prototype system is built on a conceptual framework of four steps: examination, propagation, generalisation of updates and solving spatial conflicts. The aim of the examination step is to determine which object should be created, modified or deleted in the target data set. The action is dependent on the current status of the target data set and the properties of the update to the master data set. The propagation step executes the outcome of the examination step. Furthermore, this step validates the updates and maintains the integrity of the multiple representation databas6. In the next step — generalisation of updates — the new or modified object in the target data set is generalised to suit the scale of the target data set. The final step treats spatial conflicts due to the update. A new method is proposed for solving spatial conflicts, called the constraint method, which is a generic method that resembles manual generalisation on a conceptual level.
