[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Dead wood is a critical resource for forest biodiversity and widely used as an indicator for sustainable forest management. Based on data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory we provide baseline information and analyze trends in volume and distribution of dead wood in Swedish managed forests during 15 years. The data are based on ≈30,000 sample plots inventoried during three periods (1994–1998; 2003–2007 and 2008–2012). The forest policy has since 1994 emphasized the need to increase the amount of dead wood in Swedish forests. The average volume of dead wood in Sweden has increased by 25% (from 6.1 to 7.6 m3 ha−1) since the mid-1990s, but patterns differed among regions and tree species. The volume of conifer dead wood (mainly from Picea abies) has increased in the southern part of the country, but remained stable or decreased in the northern part. Heterogeneity of dead wood types was low in terms of species, diameter and decay classes, potentially negatively impacting on biodiversity. Overall, we found only minor effects of the current forest policy since most of the increase can be attributed to storm events creating a pulse of hard dead wood. Therefore, the implementation of established policy instruments (e.g. legislation and voluntary certification schemes) need to be revisited. In addition to the retention of dead trees during forestry operations, policy makers should consider calling for more large-scale targeted creation of dead trees and management methods with longer rotation cycles. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Combined effects of litterfall and root turnover significantly increase topsoil carbon stocks in Norway spruce and European beech mixed forests, indicating local complementarity effects mediated by tree species mixtures.
Context: The establishment of mixed stands by intermingling individuals of European beech and Norway spruce is an ongoing trend in adaptive forest management strategies. However, our understanding of the potential of these strategies to promote C sequestration remains limited.
Aims: This study aims to assess the effect of species composition on SOC stock in a mixed forest of Norway spruce and European beech.
Methods: We studied C stocks in the uppermost soil layers in two stands dominated either by Norway spruce or European beech and in a mixture of both species. We evaluated the effect of litterfall and root turnover on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and its spatial distribution by combining structural equation models and geostatistical techniques.
Results: C stocks in the forest floor were highest in Norway spruce, whereas in the mineral soil, the highest values were in the mixed stand. The proportion of Norway spruce litterfall was positively related to C stock in the forest floor across stands. Root turnover was positively related to C stock in the mineral soil of the mixed stand.
Conclusion: Our results confirm a contrasting role of root turnover and litterfall between soil layers in the studied stands, suggesting that tree species composition can mediate the spatial distribution of SOC stocks in mixed forests.

[Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (auteur) Estimating forest structural attributes is one of the essential forestry-related remote sensing applications. The methods applied so far typically concentrate on the structure of the overstorey. For various conservation and management applications, however, information on lower layers is also of great interest. Detecting understorey cover by remote sensing is challenging, as passive sensors do not penetrate to the forest ground layer. An alternative to these is 3D metrics from active light detection and ranging (LiDAR). Here, we evaluate this technique for describing the vegetation density of multiple stand layers within the temperate stands of a large protected area in south-eastern Germany. We combined LiDAR metrics and information on forest habitat types with regression models to investigate LiDAR metrics that are significantly correlated with vegetation density. The top canopy and the herbal layer showed strong correlations with the applied LiDAR metrics, whereas the predictive power was lower for the intermediate stand layers. Moreover, our results suggest that the relationship between LiDAR predictors and vegetation density depends on the forest type. A comparison of the regression models with random forest predictions showed no major improvement in predictive error. In conclusion, this study highlights the value of the LiDAR metrics for characterizing the structural properties of lower forest layers, which has implications for wildlife and forest management applications, especially in protected areas. [Termes IGN] Picea abiesRésumé : (auteur) Models of height curves generated using a linear mixed effects model and generalized model were compared. Both tested models were also compared with local models of height curves, which were fitted using a nonlinear regression. In the mixed model two versions of calibration were tested. The first calibration approach was based on measurement of heights only in trees of the mean diameter interval, while the second calibration approach was based on measurement of tree heights in three diameter intervals. Generalized model is the mathematical formulation of a system of uniform height curves, which is commonly used in the Czech Republic. The study took place at Training Forest Enterprise called Masaryk Forest at Křtiny and was carried out for Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.). It was found that the mixed model behaves correctly only in the case of calibration based on selection of trees in three diameter intervals. Selection of a total of nine trees was confirmed as the most suitable to calibrate the model. In most of the calculated quality criteria, the mixed model achieved better results than the generalized model, even with a smaller number of measured heights. The bias of both models from the local model was very similar (0.54 m for the mixed model and 0.44 m for the generalized model). The mixed model can therefore fully replace the commonly used generalized model even with a smaller number of measured heights.
