[Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) A new individual tree-based algorithm for determining forest biomass using small footprint LiDAR data was developed and tested. This algorithm combines computer vision and optimization techniques to become the first training data-based algorithm specifically designed for processing forest LiDAR data. The computer vision portion of the algorithm uses generic properties of trees in small footprint LiDAR canopy height models (CHMs) to locate trees and find their crown boundaries and heights. The ways in which these generic properties are used for a specific scene and image type is dependent on 11 parameters, nine of which are set using training data and the Nelder-Mead simplex optimization procedure. Training data consist of small sections of the LiDAR data and corresponding ground data. After training, the biomass present in areas without ground measurements is determined by developing a regression equation between properties derived from the LiDAR data of the training stands and biomass, and then applying the equation to the new areas. A first test of this technique was performed using 25 plots (radius = 15 m) in a loblolly pine plantation in central Virginia, USA (37.42N, 78.68W) that was not intensively managed, together with corresponding data from a LiDAR canopy height model (resolution = 0.5 m). Results show correlations (r) between actual and predicted aboveground biomass ranging between 0.59 and 0.82, and RMSEs between 13.6 and 140.4 t/ha depending on the selection of training and testing plots, and the minimum diameter at breast height (7 or 10 cm) of trees included in the biomass estimate.

[Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover. [Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Visualization techniques have been developed to recreate natural landscapes, but little has been done to investigate their potential for illustrating land cover change using spatio-temporal data. In this work, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and visualization techniques were applied to generate realistic computer visualizations depicting the dynamic nature of forested environments. High resolution digital imagery and aerial photography were classified using object-oriented methods. . The resulting classifications, along with preexisting land cover datasets, were used to drive the correct placement of vegetation in the visualized landscape, providing an accurate representation of reality at various points in time. 3D Nature's Visual Nature Studio was used to construct a variety of realistic images and animations depicting forest cover change in two distinct ecological settings. Visualizations from Yellowstone National Park focused on the dramatic impact of the 1988 fire upon the lodgepole pine forest. For a study area in Kansas, visualization techniques were used to explore the continuous human-land interactions impacting the eastern deciduous. forest and tallgrass prairie ecotone between 1941 and 2002. The resulting products demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of visualizations for representing spatio-temporal patterns such as changing forest cover. These geographic visualizations allow users to communicate findings and explore new hypotheses in a clear, concise and effective manner. [Termes IGN] Pinus ponderosaRésumé : (Auteur) Structural and functional analyses of ecosystems benefit when high accuracy vegetation coverages can be derived over large areas. In this study, we utilize IKONOS, Landsat 7 ETM+, and airborne scanning light detection and ranging (lidar) to quantify coniferous forest and understory grass coverages in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated ecosystem in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Linear spectral mixture analyses of IKONOS and ETM+ data were used to isolate spectral endmembers (bare soil, understory grass, and tree/shade) and calculate their subpixel fractional coverages. We then compared these endmember cover estimates to similar cover estimates derived from lidar data and field measures. The IKONOS-derived tree/shade fraction was significantly correlated with the field-measured canopy effective leaf area index (LAIe) (r2 = 0.55, p Numéro de notice : A2004-235 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2003.11.003 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2003.11.003 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26762
