The demand for practical biomass mapping methods at all forest levels is growing worldwide, and viable options are being developed. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a promising forest biomass mapping technique, due to its capability of measuring the three-dimensional forest vegetation structure. The objective of the study was to develop new methods for tree-level biomass estimation using metrics derived from ALS point clouds and to compare the results with field references collected using destructive sampling and with existing biomass models. The study area was located in Evo, southern Finland. ALS data was collected in 2009 with pulse density equalling approximately 10 pulses/m2. Linear models were developed for the following tree biomass components: total, stem wood, living branch and total canopy biomass. ALS-derived geometric and statistical point metrics were used as explanatory variables when creating the models. The total and stem biomass root mean square error per cents equalled 26.3% and 28.4% for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), and 36.8% and 27.6% for Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), respectively. The results showed that higher estimation accuracy for all biomass components can be achieved with models created in this study compared to existing allometric biomass models when ALS-derived height and diameter were used as input parameters. Best results were achieved when adding field-measured diameter and height as inputs in the existing biomass models. The only exceptions to this were the canopy and living branch biomass estimations for spruce. The achieved results are encouraging for the use of ALS-derived metrics in biomass mapping and for further development of the models. [Termes IGN] Utah (Etas-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Land managers need to rapidly assess vegetation composition and bare ground to effectively evaluate and manage shrub steppe communities that have been encroached by pinyon and juniper trees. We used an object-based image analysis (obia) approach to estimate land cover classes found in pinyon-juniper woodlands, and evaluated the relationship between ground measurements and OBIA land cover measurements. We acquired high-spatial resolution color-infrared imagery for five sites with a Vexcel UltraCamX digital camera in June 2009. We simultaneously collected ground-based cover measurements within 30 m x 33 m subplots. OBIA mean land cover class differences by site ranged from underestimating litter by 3 percent to overestimating live trees by 1 percent when compared to ground-based measurements. Overall accuracy for thematic maps was 84 percent with a Kappa statistic of 0.80. Although OBIA cover estimates varied slightly from ground cover estimates, methods provide land managers with options for prioritizing management practices and enabling monitoring at an operational scale. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) The diameter at breast height (DBH) is the most extensively measured parameter in the field for estimating stem volume and aboveground biomass of individual trees. However, DBH can not be measured from airborne or spaceborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Consequently, volume and biomass must be estimated from LiDAR data using other tree metrics. The objective of this paper is to examine whether full-waveform (FW) LiDAR data can improve volume and biomass estimation of individual pine trees, when compared to usual discrete-return LiDAR data. Sets of metrics are derived from canopy height model (CHM-only metrics), from the vertical distribution of discrete-returns (CHM+DR metrics), and from full-waveform LiDAR data (CHM+FW metrics). In each set, the most relevant and non-collinear metrics were selected using a combination of methods using best subset and variance inflation factor, in order to produce predictive models of volume and biomass. CHM-only metrics (tree height and tree bounding volume [tree height x crown area] provided volume and biomass estimates of individual trees with an error (mean error ± standard deviation) of 2% ± 26% and -15% ±49%, which is equivalent to previous studies. CHM+FW metrics did not improve stem volume estimates (5% ± 31%), but they increased the accuracy of aboveground biomass estimates ( -4%±31%). The approach is limited by the delineation of individual trees. However, the results highlight the potential of full-waveform LiDAR data to improve aboveground biomass estimates through a better integration of branch and leaf biomass than with discrete-return LiDAR data.
