[Termes IGN] Pinus sylvestrisRésumé : (auteur) Several techniques were used to investigate the threshold minimum temperature inducing severe frost damage during winter in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles and stems from southern provenances in the Iberian Peninsula. Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, electrolyte leakage (EL), visual scoring (VS), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were compared. Chl fluorescence, and in particular the maximum potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency – estimated through the dark-acclimated Fv/Fm ratio -, was found to be a simple, non-destructive indicator of freezing tolerance in needles, as expected. Moreover, the existence of a Chl-containing tissue, the cortical bark chlorenchyma, allowed us the use of Chl fluorescence as a new non-destructive indicator of frost damage in live tissues of Pinus sylvestris L. stems.F reezing tolerance values of southern provenances are compared with those found by other authors in the northern distribution limit of the species. [Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) We present here the results of a water and nutrient manipulation experiment in a five-year-old plantation of maritime pine in south-western France. $\bullet$ Water and nutrient levels were manipulated in a factorial design with two levels of irrigation (control receiving only rainfall (C) and irrigated (I)) and three levels of fertilisation (control with no added nutrients (C), P-only (P) and annual addition of a complete nutrient mix (F)) in order to quantify growth limitations of plantation forest in this particular area. The treatments applied during five years increased aboveground biomass annual increment by 4% (I) to 58% (IF) with respect to the control (C). The fertilised plots had a slightly non-significant lower root-to-shoot ratio. The effect of irrigation was maximal in 2002, resulting in 6%, 7% and 12% higher growth rate on the F, C and P plots, respectively. A windstorm disturbed the experiment in 1999 and has affected preferentially the fertilised plots, with IF plots displaying 60% damage. The higher growth rate of fertilised and irrigated plots was attributed to both an increase (estimated at 5 to 15%) in the amount of light absorbed by the canopy, and an increase (estimated at 26% for IF plots) in the amount of above-ground biomass produced annually per unit leaf area. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) It is agreed that climate (precipitation and temperature) influences the distribution of plant species. Near the margins of a species' natural range, climate becomes limiting to physiological processes. There, climate change may be expected to have a significant impact on tree growth and the species' ranges may be altered. In order to assess what influence climate change could exert on the distribution of pine species at their margin, radial growth trends in ring-width chronologies over the last century were analysed. In the French Mediterranean area where climate change is characterized by increased temperature, forest plots were selected along an altitudinal transect on the north-facing slope of the Sainte-Baume mountain (Bouches-du-Rhône, France) where the ranges of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus halepensis overlap. Two growth patterns were identified. For P. halepensis, radial growth has increased at all altitudes indicating that climate change has improved growth conditions of this species near the margin of its ecological range. For P. sylvestris, radial growth has increased only at low altitudes and even decreased at high altitudes. It must be deduced that the growth changes observed cannot be generalised either at the species level or at the geographical level and must be interpreted with great caution. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) In spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a single-polarization on-transmit offers twice the swath width compared to full polarization. This is linked to SAR system design issues, and, without getting into the technical details deserving by themselves a full paper, we can just mention the swath characteristics of ALOS PALSAR (the Advanced Land Observing Satellite, Phased Array L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar), reducing from 70 km for the dual-pol mode to 30 km for the full polarization mode. The reduced coverage in the full polarization mode has a harmful impact on the revisit time, which is always a major drive for the Earth-observing community. The options chosen up to now for dual-pol system designs (or single-polarization on-transmit) rely on a linear polarization on-transmit [either horizontal (H) or vertical (V)], with two orthogonal polarizations on-receive. Souyris and Raney in earlier papers proposed more pertinent alternatives for the selection of the transmit polarization leading to a better characterization of the scattering mechanisms. In this paper, the analysis is pursued in more depth by including the effect of the ionosphere on the wave propagation and extending the applications to polarimetric interferometry SAR (PolInSAR). A compact mode is developed where the transmit polarization is circular, whereas the only constraint on the two receiving polarizations is independence. Indeed, the choice of the polarizations of the two receive channels does not matter, as any polarization on-receive can be synthesized from these two measurements. This is, however, not the case for the unique transmit polarization. At a low frequency, where the ionosphere has a significant effect, the circular transmit polarization is the only sensible option, as it provides an effective constant polarization as seen by the scattering surface. This is an essential condition for a meaningful multitemporal analysis. Both the polarimetric SAR applications and the PolInSAR applications in the context of this compact polarimetry (CP) mode are explored. A pseudocovariance matrix can be reconstructed following Souyris' proposed approach for distributed targets and is shown to be very similar to the full polarimetric (FP) covariance matrix. The reconstruction of the cross-polarized Sigma0 is shown to be reliable and to have very low sensitivity to Faraday rotation. A PolInSAR vegetation height inversion for P-band is presented and applied to the CP data with a level of performance that is similar to the one derived from FP (a 1.2-m root-mean-square height error on the ONERA Airborne radar (RAMSES) data over the Landes Forest). A procedure is developed to correct for the ionospheric effects for the PolInSAR acquisition in the FP or CP mode and is assessed on the data simulated from an airborne acquisition. The results demonstrate that the technique is efficient and robust. The calibration of CP data is identified as an important challenge to be solved, and some clues are provided to address the problem.
