Nevertheless, no comprehensive analysis of the genuine relevance of each data source has been performed so far: existing strategies are limited to a single spatial and spectral resolution. This paper investigates which is the optimal combination of geospatial optical images and lidar point clouds. A supervised semantic segmentation framework is fed with various sources (multispectral satellite and airborne images, hyperspectral airborne images, low, medium and high density lidar point clouds), ablation cases are defined, and the discrimination performance of several fusion schemes is assessed under a challenging mountainous area in France. [Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) A plethora of forest models were developed by transforming the dependent variable, which introduces bias if appropriate corrections are not applied when back-transformed. Many recognized models are still biased and the original data sets are no longer available, which suggests ad hoc bias corrections. The present research presents a procedure for bias correction in the absence of needed information from summary statistics. Additionally, we developed a realistic correction of the square root transformation based on a truncated normal distribution. The transformations considered in this study are the logarithm, the square root and arcsine square root. Using simulated data we found that uncorrected back-transformation created biases by as much as 100 percent. The generated data revealed that depending on available information, that bias can still be present after correction. In addition to generated data we corrected the site index of Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine in Oregon USA, tree volume of 27 species from Romania, stand merchantable volume for longleaf pine in Louisiana and East Texas USA, and canopy fuel weight in Washington USA. Using only the available information, the unbiased back-transformed estimates can change from ≤1 percent (i.e. the site index and canopy fuel weight) to ≥⅓ (tree and stand volume). [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Variability and interrelations between wood density, water content, and related properties were analyzed by CT scanning of five species. Relative water content of lumens is proposed as the best complement to basic specific gravity for discrimination of species with respect to their functioning.
Context : X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an efficient tool for analysis of wood properties related to density and water content all along a tree stem. Basic specific gravity, an inherent property of the wood material, is well known and widely used in wood sciences.
Aims : The first aim of this study was to describe a method for mapping a set of wood properties within a tree stem. The second objective was to analyze the relations among these properties and to identify the one that offers the best information in addition to basic specific gravity for discrimination of species.
Methods : Wood discs were collected at various heights along a tree stem. We used a method consisting of comparing the CT images of the discs in the green state and after oven drying. Finally, 10 variables were computed for 115 trees of five temperate species: green, oven-dry, and basic specific gravities; moisture content; relative water content; relative water content of lumens; and fractions of air, water, free water, and cell walls.
Results : Maps of wood properties summarizing the radial and vertical variations were obtained, allowing us to highlight species-specific patterns. The five species were discriminated best when plotted in the plane defined by basic specific gravity and relative water content of lumens.
Conclusion : The proposed method is original and simple enough to process large samples. Because it correlated less with basic specific gravity than with moisture content, relative water content of lumens was selected for species characterization. This is the first study of such wood properties at this fine scale within a tree stem, simultaneously and for a substantial number of trees of five species including both hardwoods and softwoods.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In the context of forest and landscape management, the use of introduced tree species is an important and controversial topic. On one hand, the species can provide an opportunity for timber production and for adapting the species composition within forests so that forests can better cope with the changing climate while on the other hand, such species may cause biodiversity loss and/or disturbance to native ecosystems. Introduced tree species in European forests – opportunities and challenges is a compilation of scientific and practical knowledge on introduced tree species in European forests and contains contributions from 89 authors from 18 countries. The historical context of species introductions plays a key role in understanding the current as well as possible future distribution of tree species. There has been an intensive discussion on the interactions between the introduced tree species and their introduced environment, and also on the processes that may lead to the species becoming invasive within their introduced range. The risk of a species becoming invasive can be evaluated using suitable risk assessments that help us to predict the future behaviour of the species, and also the potential contributions of these species to ecosystem services provided by the forests where they occur. Therefore, the links between the introduced tree species and the key topics such as economics, climate change, pests and diseases and effects on biodiversity are also assessed in order to demonstrate the complexity of the issues pertaining to the introduction of tree species. Case studies of selected introduced tree species occurring in Europe are presented to demonstrate the necessity to manage ecosystems in order to fulfil certain goals; the case studies cover species- specific and site-specific experiences as sharing the application of suitable management practices is of particular interest.
